2.4L timing chain noise?

Hey guys, today a noise started coming from the passenger side of my motor. I imediatly took it to a shop, first place said it could be the tensioner pulley for the belt or the timing chain. second shop said definitely timing chain. now the noise isnt tooo terrible, but you can hear it for sure. now is this super bad? im goign to be rebuilding this car in a few months, i think its just a rattle in the timing chain and the guy at the second shop told me his neighbor has been driving his cavalier like this for a year. i feel like im taking a huge gamble driving it. i just dont know what to do, i cant rebuild it at this time.

idk... do you think it will be ok to drive for a few months? do you think its the timing chain or the tensioner pully? or is there another thing that makes noise on that side?

my tensioner went bad and it sounded like a diesel i drove it for about a month or two like that but it is quite risky considering the 2.4 is an interference engine so if the chain goes it is going to do some major damage. i just replaced the tensioner and not the chain but if your going to rebuild then just replace the whole timing set

I know you posted this over a month ago, but the best thing to do is remove the serpentine belt and wiggle BOTH your tensioner And the idler pulley. (not at the same time!) I had the same problem and assumed it was the tensioner. Took the belt off and WOW, the idle pulley flopped around like a broken wing. 5 bearings were completely gone! Cost: $1500!

"Fat finger!" Cost was $15.00, not $1,500!
