Overheating issues.....acting oddly
Saturday, September 01, 2012 7:18 PM
Okay so I have a 99 Sunfire, 2.2L it's been "overheating" so I replaced the water pump, thermostat, and radiator. I have bled the system to the best of my ability. Now what it's doing is..... The car can sit there and run sitting still for 30min plus, the temp gauge will rise all the way up to the red at I believe is 260 mark, the red light on the dash bottom corner that says check gauges comes on then after that point I can ref the engine and it will drop back down and sit in the middle of the temp gauge until say 5min later it will do the same thing. Today I noticed no leaks but that the coolant reservoir bottle is starting to budge up and steam out coolant from the side of it like its getting too hot and has way to much pressure, but I have checked for leaks before driving, after driving and while and nothing..... I'm not to sure what else it can be the radiator fan comes on and works fine. I'm not to sure if it could be a instrument cluster issue or sensor of some sort. If any one has any insight I would apprecaite it so much.

Sounds like you may have a small crack in ur head gasket...its letting exaust into you water jacket in the block and building pressure in ur reservoir. Mine did this a while back....there were no normal signs of a blown headgasket but that's exactly what it was

What did your coolant look like when you replaced your radiator? Was there any/much mineral deposits, like stones, in there? "Maybe" the thermostat got clogged?
Also, does anyone know if it is possible that the temperature sensor is bad, thus sending a false "high" to your temp gauge?
My '01 cav is doing the EXACT same thing right now, so I need to highjack your thread...maybe kill two birds with one stone? We did a head gasket job last month (head was resurfaced, valves ground, new gaskets "everywhere" & replaced the water pump, thermostat, timing chain & guides.
Now then, I replaced the radiator yesterday because there was a "significant" amount of calcium and lime deposits throughout the block so I safely assumed that the radiator was totally clogged. We cleared out the block the best we could of all the mineral deposits, but...is it possible that upon startup the coolant flow could have lodged something back into my thermostat, thus causing some blockage there? Getting to the thermostat on my 2.4L is a MAJOR PITA!
Thanks to ANYONE who can help us out with this!

Got it! I had air trapped in my coolant lines! I "properly" bled the system (and topped off with more coolant) and that eliminated both the overheating issue AND the odd high idle/revving issue that I had. Try that. My son checked out a video on "ericthecarguy.com" and even though I don't have a radiator cap, it works the same with just the coolant overflow tank, which I believe that you have.

I've tried to bleed the system and now the radiator hoses are rock solid hard, and I never get any heat in the inside of the car, and now it has white smoke out the tail pipe, still does the boiling bubble back in the reservoir bottle.. Any advice now?

Yup - classic signs of a blown headgasket.

Hello, I am having overheating issues as well, the car warms up good in the mornings but when I turn on the heater, the car temp goes up all the way and over heats.. I changed out the radiator and thermostat but it still does the same thing... any suggestions??

recheck your fan motor.
it may appear to work, but make sure it comes on at all times and stays on like it should. Mine wasnt coming on, i thought it was and it would get into the red. Replaced the fan motor $25, works like a charm, stays around 195+ mostly now unless its very hot and im in traffic, only goes up a bit. I put a cordless drill battery up to the old fan motor and it wouldnt run, would creep..basically the motor was dying.

I have a 1998 Z24 just recently going through this engine getting hot issue..... Replaced my Thermostat, CTS (Cooling Temperature Sensor), Still getting hot.... sat and decided duh check see if the fan is working, it doesn't come on. Changed fuses and the relay... Still nothing. I changed the Cooling fan motor still nothing so now I'm to the point wiring issue. My question could the plug that goes to the fan itself just be burnt inside? because I checked under my fuse board under the hood and everything is connected fine there is constant going to the 30A for the cooling fan as it supposed to but no power making it to the fan plug.

Ok I broke everything down just about got into the back of the fuse block where the relays are and found for some reason the green wire to the relay switch is not giving the relay signal to engage the cooling fan.... my question is... does anyone know where that green wire goes to?

did you test your fan with a battery or something before you installed it? a new one should work but I wouldnt put it past the parts store to give you one someone returned.
luckily mine was as simple as that, just the motor went out. but its a BITCH on a supercharged setup with the LSJ manifold and dual pass endplate, i tore up my hands pretty good replacing that fan motor. But i tested it with a cordless drill battery before installing it. Old one just barely moved, was dead.

Just go into Advanced Auto/Auto Zone/Napa etc and see if you can just look in one of the haynes or chiltons, should tell you.

All the relays in your car are switched ground, most people test them wrong. FYI.

Well I found that the green wire runs to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) I been looking to up the chips and what not in my car anyway so I am going to swap and put a performance PCM in.

100% Guarantee that you won't be doing that.
