I bought this car a couple of months ago (2001 Sunfire 2.2L) and I have been pulling the P0440 Code ever since I bought it. I disconnected the battery and that got rid of it for about 100 miles, then it was back.
I swapped the gas cap.....no change there.
I looked at the lines coming out of the Evap Canister......everything seems to be okay there.
What else should I check/replace to get rid of this code? <br>

go get it read somewhere and then you will know exactly what to replace <br>
I already had it read, that is why I know what the code is.
P0440: Evap System Leak
AutoZone told me to check all of the Evap System Lines.
I was hoping that someone here could tell me what the most common places are to look, as I am not familiar with this engine yet.
As I said before, I have already changed the gas cap and checked the evap canister, along with the lines/wires going to and from it.

man that problem could be any where, you basically have to check all the evap hoses. it it throwing the code causing the check engine light to come on, or did you just read that the code is pending? <br>

sooo much easier in the long run and yes, something will always go wrong. <br>
i'm listening....mine has done that for about 6 months. i haven't bothered troubleshooting or experimenting since the car is running well. but keep us posted!

That code has beeen on for mine for the last 7,000 miles. I replaced the gas cap, still came back on. Can anyone tell me where some of that stuff is that I should check? I believe the EVAP canister is in the rear by the gas tank, the big black box? Everything looked fine there I am w/ you though, I can't find anything wrong w/ it!!! <br>

you can start by replacing your Gas Cap
that's what I did to mine and the check engine light never came back on again

My car is throwing code P0442 - Emissions control System Lead Detected (small Leak)
The filler tube (the part the cap screws to) is rusted, has anyone tried replacing that to correct the tube?
Haven't checked that. I will check that out & see if anything is wrong there <br>

Well, I successful found and fixed the problem.
I jacked the rear of the car up this weekend and started thoroughly examining the Evap Canister. I found a broken wire going to what I believe is the Purge Valve. It was one of two wires in a weather-pak connector that plugs into the connectors in the floor boards.
I removed the harness and soldered the wire back together. Drive the car around on and off all day and went through enough cycles to get the light to turn off.
Hopefully, I won't have to see it again for a while.
Also, the other wire in that harness was just about to break itself. I am not sure why that was, but I wrapped both of them really well with electrical tape to prevent any further problems. <br>

I should have known. I just had the same exact issue with my 2001 Cavalier. The light has been on for over 6 months, just got around to hunting down the problem. Got under the back after checking the EVAP lines and checked the wires. Found that one was completely broken from the connector. What caused the wire to completely break is due the manufactures use of an incorrect style connector that doesn’t have a stress relief end. The wire had the plastic braided covering which was suppose to be originally electrical taped to the connector which came off. This eventually allowed the wires to be exposed. The wire's plastic coat cracked and eventually got wet, this caused the copper core to corrode and break. This is why it looked like the wire had been cut; if you would have looked you probably would have noticed that the end was slightly green or corroded. So I ran out to the junk yard and picked up a good condition harness as mine was un-repairable. The wire broke so close to the connector it could not be soldered. Had the SES light turned off by AutoZone and it has not came on since. Ran it through 5 driving cycles and did not turn up any codes.
Hopefully this may help some others with the P0440 EVAP Malfunction Code on a newer Cavalier or Sunfire.
Maybe if we have a Tech Note or FAQs this can be added. I am sure this is a more prominent problem.

Problem was not a leak. It was a broken harness wire going to the pressure surge valve.

i realize that I'm just saying your not very likely to find a leak by looking at the hoses unless it is very obvious, but it rarely is.

I have a 2000 Cavalier and I've getting the same P0440 code it's been on for about 1 month. My friend has a 2001 and has been getting the same code for about 2 months. I took it to AutoZone for the test and their book read:
P0440 - P0442
EVAP (Evaporative Emission System) Small leak/no flow condition.
1. Gas cap not sealed.
2. EVAP canister or hose cracked - not connected
3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
4. Vacuum leak at engine
I wanted to add there appears to have been a Technical Service Bulletin released by GM. If anyone gets there hands on the GM recommended solution please post. Thanks.

Hopefully, I'll get to jack it up tomorrow. I must admit, I'm not much of a mechanic. If it's obvious I shouldn't have a problem. Could you tell me where and what to I should be looking for?

Service Engine Soon (SES) Light Illuminated, DTC P0440 Set (Replace Fuel Tank Evaporative Emissions Control System (EVAP) Vent Solenoid Harness)
Models:
2000-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier
2000-2002 Pontiac Sunfire
Condition
Some customers may comment that the SES light is/was illuminated.
A technician may find DTC P0440 is stored in the PCM.
Cause
The EVAP solenoid harness may be misrouted around the rear antilock brake (ABS) wire harness causing a chaff/damage to the EVAP vent solenoid harness, setting DTC P0440.
Correction
Follow the service procedure below to diagnose and correct this condition.
1. Install a Tech 2 scan tool and select the appropriate vehicle. Verify that a DTC P0440 is stored in the PCM.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID # 512922).
3. Locate and inspect the EVAP vent solenoid harness (3) routing. The harness may be routed below the ABS wiring harness (4) at the right rear corner of the fuel tank, causing stress on the EVAP solenoid harness (3).
4. Disconnect the EVAP vent solenoid harness (3) from the EVAP vent solenoid (2) and connector C313 (1). Discard the EVAP vent solenoid harness (3).
5. Connect the new EVAP vent solenoid harness (3), P/N 22687059, to the EVAP vent solenoid (2), route the harness above the rear ABS harness (4) and connect the EVAP vent solenoid harness (3) to connector C313 (1).
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Clear the DTC's with the Tech 2 scan tool.
