Ok I have a 95 cavalier and I just bought an "Innova Equus" OBD II reader so I could get the code from my computer. Everytime I plug it in it turns on but when I hit link it shows error. I know I have a OBD I computer but the haynes manual said it will read it but it will only give me the old 2 digit codes. Is something bad with my wiring/computer or does this reader just not work with my car? please help.........
I BELIEVE the 95's and perhaps the 94's were a non-fully compliant OBD2 system. So the reader you have will not do any good. I saw on at least one other post that someone with a 95 was claiming only the delaer could read his codes. I have not NOT experience with this but seems as if the transition vehicles from OBD1 to OBD2 can be a problem.
Any input from this that have them?
From the stories I've heard (My Cavalier was a 4 door 95) the first half of the year they were OBDI and the second half they were OBDII. My Cavalier was an OBDI and an OBDII scanner will not work on it. My buddy had an OBDII scanner ($150 from Autozone) and the same message would appear, they won't link to an OBDI system.
I have the same problem! I have a '95 with an OBD-II port, but apparently they don't use OBD-II codes yet! How on earth can I read the codes?
The only way is to go to a GM dealer. You won't be able to read the code otherwise. 95 and some 96 are like that. Even if you try with the normal OBDI trick, you won't find it.
OBDI Ecm with an OBDII plug. Only Gm can read it.

Isn't there a way to make the CEL flash for the codes on an obdI system ? I would try that before spent $80 on a code reading from the dealer.

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.
^^ nope read what mfk-223 said "Even if you try with the normal OBDI trick, you won't find it." thats what he ment by that.... you cannot read them any way you have to take it to the dealer... sorry about your luck...
Contact Innova Equus, there is suppose to be a special adaptor, but I think its for a OBD1 scanner.
BUMP and update.
Most odb1 code readers like autoxray will now read codes from the 95.
i have the 95 computer as well. I've been able to get local shops who have the red snap on readers to read my codes. It sucks though, you need to go to a fairly good shop who know what they are doing, and have the correct code scanner. Usually, the local shops are cheaper then the dealer.
