Ignition Module the problem???
Saturday, March 05, 2005 9:39 AM
99 2.2 Cav 88K Sluggish acceleration was why I started troubleshooting and replacing such things as fuel filter, Spark plugs, wires and now yesterday I changed the coil packs thinking that was the problem. Well when I installed the new packs the car just got worse. When it does start I feel like I am in a rodeo the car bucks and shudders like I am in an earthquake. When I shift into drive or reverse it just quits. So it is immovable right now. What it sounds to me is that fuel is getting to the engine but there is something wrong with the ignition process.

So last night as I was thinking about when I switched out the coil packs. On that metal plate on the ignition module there was a mysterious mark kinda like someone went nuts with an engraving tool in an erratic pattern bout the size of a quarter. On the back of the coil pack of 3&2 was the same exact pattern as if the module went tits up, shorted out and "burned" the rear of the 3&2 coil pack.

And of course yesterday when I was going bananas trying everything I could I pulled out the newly installed plugs...4&1 were ok but 3&2 were black with soot! What does this mean?

All right y'all....

i have a 2002 cavy with the 2200 and the wires going to the ign module shorted out on the module bracket. I had a miss from hell and new plugs and wires and coils did not help . went to the Chevy dealer and this is what they said "scp diag p0300 dtc and running condition due to shorted ckt 406. the wire was shorted at ign module bracket. cars runs like new again.

i doubt all 4 injectors went bad at once.

I'd say fuel pump if taking a blind shot. But save yourself some money and buy a fuel pressure guage and check your fuel pressure with the specs.

I have a similar problem, but mine runs better when it is cold, and once it heats up it bearly runs. I can reach the coil packs but how much more difficult/ or if really difficult/ expensive is it to get the module repaired?
Thanks

So, you changed:-

1. The coils.

then

2. The Ignition Module.

Could it be that the Ignition Module fried coil 3 & 2, you then replaced coils, 3 & 2 was fried again, you replaced the igniton module but the 3 & 2 coil is still fried from the old Ignition Module

I have seen this where the coil was replaced, caused a temporary fix and then failed again, had to replace the Ignition Module and the coil (again) for a permanent solution.

" newly installed plugs...4&1 were ok but 3&2 were black with soot!" Cylinders 3 & 2 are not getting enough spark so the plugs are fouling, the coil that sends them the spark will be first suspect,, on the 2.4 the coil housing is always guilty, not sure on the 2.2 though.
