Squeaking while accelerating, any ideas?
Sunday, May 01, 2005 9:06 PM
When I am pressing the gas pedal, accelerating or just driving, I hear this inconsitent sounding squeaking coming from my engine. When I the lay off the gas and coast, it stops after a second and it doesn't do it if I press the gas in netural. Thats about all i can say about this problem. Based on that, any ideas as to what it can be?

If its a squeal it could be wheel bearings, or something in the drivetrain hard to say without hearing it personally.

I was going to suggest a slipping fan belt, but it could be alot of things.

As far as a bad wheel bearing, The noise I heard from mine was only heard while turning (under load) and made a groan sound, similar to how a truck sounds with mud tires on asphalt.

I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.

I'd also have to suggest the Serpentine belt on the car. I know I've heard belts squeal on other cars when they got on the gas and then it settled down after they left off the gas. My serpentine belt, when it went bad, was completely opposite. It'd sit their and squeal under idle but as soon as you got on the gas it would smooth out.

If it's more of a squeak then a squeal then as others suggested it could be a bearing of some sort. Potentially one of the pulleys making the squeaking noise? My power steering pump pully squeaked when the power steering pump was dying. Hm, no other suggestions really from me.

^^^ thats yer wheelbearing for sure.... replace ASAP

also Narco... check all the pulleys on yer drive belt....maybe a tensioner is going bad... but for the most part check the wheelbearings and belt.....................and everything surrounding the drive axles

in one instance a buddy of mine broke one of his lower control arm bolds and under heavy acceleration his cv shaft would slightly rub on this stabilizer endling.....check those too........however i forget what kinda car he was driving
