i just need to know where the thermo is located and how hard it is to change. i heard that you have to take off the timing chain cover and the chain to replace it. i just wanna make sure, if so then i will do this when i have to change the water pump

ive heard that the thermostat is down by the water pump and is a pain in the ass to do on a 2.4
according to haynes
drain the rad
remove exhaust manifold heat shield
remove the cover that protects the outlet pipe on the thermostat
disconnect the rad hose from the metal outlet pipe
remove the outlet pipe bolt and seperate the outlet pipe from the thrmostant housing and engine block
note how its installed and remove the themostat from the outlet pipe
clean gasket material from mating surfaces
I did mine last week and it was a breeze. I have heard that with an auto tranny it is much more difficult, but mine is 5sp, so no problem.
The haynes instructions are pretty much right....but I didn't bother to drain the rad first, once you disconnect the pipe from the water pump, it pretty much drains itself.
Also, no need to remove the heat shield, you can access the bolts thru it pretty easily.
Should take maybe 30 min, tops.
No need to remove timing chain cover for the thermostat...only if you plan to replace the water pump itself, which can be a nightmare.
yea well I think I will eventually have to do the water pump. I will prolly just postpone the inevitable by getting a better radiator and lower thermo, but eventually I will have to replace it lol. oh well, when I do that I will prolly do some more stuff tho cause I will have some downtime with the car. so it should only take around 30 mins then? thats good news, thanks everyone.....

I would like to bring this back to life for a moment.
I've been under my car for the last couple of hours, I CANT FIND IT >_<....My knuckles are bleeding, my paitence is this, and i just can't seem to find it. Does anyone have some detailed pictures, or can possible give me a detailed discription on the best way to find it?
Thanks in advance.

BTW, I'm talking about the Thermostat =P....I can't find the Thermostat.
Thank you

Its not that hard really, two bolts on the lower pipe to the waterpump cover, then the bolt on the side of the block, replace the thermostat, same to put it back on.
I dont know why i'm having such a hard time finding it. Is it accessed from under the car, or on top?
Cause i took apart one peice, One bolt to the body, and two to the side of the block, and in letters, it said " Thermostat Located At Water Pump "
.....I can't find it, and i'm freakin out, Lol!
Lil' more detail please?
Thank you

After you remove the heat shield.
its right there under the water pump on the back of the motor and the firewall
its 2 8mm bolts.
Jack the car up
remove the front right tire
remove fender cover
remove the braket holding the pipe that goes up to the water-pump
remove the heat shield
follow the lower hose that goes from the radiator up to the water-pump.
you will see 2 8mm bolts, remove this two bolts with an extension bar from the top if you can't get to it.
I have a 97 with the 2.4, just did a thermostat. Here's what I did...
1. Remove the radiator reserve tank cap, drain the rad. Most of the dexcool comes out, but there will still be a mess when you do step 2.
2. Find that flattened looking pipe on the bottom of the passenger side of the engine. Towards the front is a spring clamp connecting it to the rad hose. Squeeze the clamp and slide it on to the hose, then pull the hose off. There will be more dexcool gush out. If you follow the flat pipe to the back of the engine and up, that's where the thermostat is.
3. Remove the exhaust heat shield. Get a shop light. Lean over the passenger side and look down between the exhaust manifold pipes. It's there, buried under the passenger side of the exhaust manifold. Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat with a 1/4 drive socket. Use an extension and a knuckle for the bolt closest to the drivers side, the other one you can get by reaching under the manifold.
4. Go back under the car. On the flat pipe there's one bolt holding it to the oil pan. It has an extra threaded part sticking out, feel free to cut this part off after you remove it, so you can use a socket when you put it back in.
5. The thermostat and pipe should come out from the bottom of the engine.
I didn't have to jack the car up or pull anything out from the wheel well for mine, but I made the mistake of putting in a cheap thermostat and having to do this a second time with a "good" thermostat.
Hope this helped ya.
