hey, ive swapped out the 98 ecu for a 99 non EGR ecu...
it has been reflashed correctly, but when i try to start it...
it turns over fine and starts but immediatly stalls. then it will not turn over unless i
remove the key and try it again.
ive disconnected the battery, and tried a few things..
disconnect battery, wait, reconnect and start
- same result
disconnect battery, wait, reconnect and start, then leave the key in the Run position for a an hour or 24...
- same result
disconnect battery, wait, reconnect and turn key to the run position for an hour or 24
- same result
disconnect battery, wait, reconnect and turn key to the ON position for an hour or 24
- same result
and ive repeated the same step without diconnecting the battery...
only locked my keys in it once
any ideas on how to get aroung/fix the theft system (suspected cause)

"forcast for tomorrow... a few sprinkles of genius and a chance of doom"
bring it into gm to have the passlock re-programmed with a tech 2
to get around the theft system is easy.
1) get in the car and start it
2) let it die and then turn the key to the on position
3) leave the key in the on position and dont touch anything (no radio, dont roll down the windows (unless manual), dont open the doors, nothing!)
4) sit there for about 10 mins and the theft light will stop flashing (i believe it either starts flashing or stops, i cant remember, but its one of the 2)
5) you'll hear a noise of the computer (i guess) re-writing itself
6) after the noise stops, wait a min
7) turn the key to the off position but dont take it out
8) leave it in the off position for 15 secs then start the car
should fire right up. shifted informed me that this doesnt work on 00+ js but if it does you may need to repeat all the steps 2 more times to get it to work.
thanks,
i'll give that a shot

yay....
worked on the 1st try.
i think the key was turning it off after the light stopped flashing
:-)
and no CEL yet for the missing EGR...

Yes, that's definitely the key piece of info... the PCM learns the R-code 5 seconds AFTER you turn the key off... so if you don't do that, it never re-learns it.

mine does the same thing. if i do this a couple times is the problem cured??!!!!!!!
did you change anything that may cause it?

my car is still doing the start stall and then the theft flashes!!i have done that sequence 20 plus times and it still f's up. i had my computer checked and it says everything is fine, but my abs, e-brake,airbag, everylight but the cooolant and check engine r on. grounds r fine, battery is brand new optima red top. i want to take it to chevy but they said they would charge me 80 bucks to hook it to the computer and i know the problem won't be found that way. ne body have ne ideas. i'm lost and beginning to hate taking it places. even when i wait for the theft to stop, turn it back and wait. it still stalls. i've been stuck for ne where from 20min to 2 hours!! it SUCKS!!!!!!!!! would mr goodwrench have ne ideas. he seems to know alot about this but he's off when i'm on.
please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ßãggéÐÇåv98 (Ûñqùðtäߣè Øñé) has the right idea, but....
start car...let it stall...DO NOT turn the key off...wait 10 minutes...the light will stop flashing and go on solid.....attempt to start car again from the ON position...if it starts and runs, your good to go......If it stalls, again do not turn off the key....repeat from step 1,
It sometimes takes 3 consecutive relearn cycles to program the r-code properly...typical GM.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence you tried!

According to GM, for 95-99 cars:
Quote:
Password Learn Procedure
In order for a theft detterrent vehicle to run, a password is communicated between the Intrustment Panel Cluster (IPC) and the PCM. If a PCM is replaced, the new PCM needs to learn the correct password of the vehicle. When the new PCM is installed, the EEPROM calibration is flashed into the new PCM and the vehicle will learn the new password upon initial ignition ON. If the IPC is replaced, the PCM needs to learn the new password from the IPC. The password learn procedure is as follows:
1. Attempt to start the vehicle, then leave the ignition ON. The THEFT SYSTEM light telltale will flash for 10 minutes.
2. When the THEFT SYSTEM telltale stops flashing, start the vehicle. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned.
2000-05 cars have similar procedure for the BCM relearn... but it's three times 10 minutes, and the ignition has to be turned off for 5 seconds inbetween and after each 10 minute cycle. The password relearn happens in the 5 seconds after the third 10 minute cycle, and ONLY then... so if you try to start it after the theft light turns off following the third cycle... it wouldn't work... and you have to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!!
(I did that at the dealer once... replaced the BCM, had them 'tweak' it with the Tech 2... then did the password re-learn... but I didn't turn it off on the third try... so it stalled out and I had to redo it all over again.... 60 minutes later... I could drive it again

what a pain in the arse!)

my car will start fine maybe 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 times and then nothin the theft will stall it out.sometimes it starts, other times it doesn't.i don't know. loudsound, john, thanks for the help! if you think of somethin else, let me know and ill try it the way u guys r tellin me. i was told to turn the key off, so maybe it will work...
If it works for a while, then craps out... it's something to do with the Passlock system... likely the key is old and giving random different R-codes (R stands for resistance). The hall-effect sensor in the lock cylinder reads the resistance of the key itself and generates the R-code... if you have a non-GM key cut, it can do this as well. ie. Walmart copy of key.
Usually GM keys are the best... and they're not that much more than a cheap copy.

i've gotboth the original keys,so i guess take it to chevy and ask them to check the the passlock system. john, one thing you said was that the lock cylyinder reads the r code!!?
nowhere's the funny thing, i put the key in,turn fowards one position, nothin, the next, all dash lights exept check engine and coolant, and then theres like an8th of an inch turn and then it's ready to start. iguess whati'm tryin to say is that there is play in the cylinder. i can jigglemy key. would that have to do with the shop replacing the air bags or can i not blame thisbson them.thanks again for your guys help.
If the key cylinder is being goofy, then that's likely your problem
<a href="http://www.lenkorules.com/"><img src="http://members.shaw.ca/jlenko/sig/redsig.jpg"></a>
if you can'ttell i suck at typing.(ie.above) what i ment to say was that i can jiggle the key and some ofmylights in my dash go on/off etc. can i get a used cylinder or should i go new and if so, do u have n e idea how much it is?again thanks alot.hopei'm not annoying!!
