I got a weird situation here so hopefullt this will make sense. I have a 99z and recently noticed that the sunroof will only open fully when it is hot (sunny) outside. In the morning the weather is a little cooler so when I go to open the sunroof, it will only open 1/3 of the way and this will vary sometime. I can always close the sunroof so going forward is not an issue. Issue is only when opening the sunroof on a cooler day.
I have re-lubbed the tracks and made sure there were no debris caught in between. I'm definitly scratching my head here.
I did a search and found this thread
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=11&i=57665&t=57500&arch=1#57665 but there was no resolution. The problem described is the exact same thing that is happening to me.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks In advance.
SH!T man I have the exact problem. I'm gonna go to my mechanic to find out I'll post what I learned soon
LOL...glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem
I'll definitly keep an eye on this thread to see what the cause is. In the meantime, the weather is hot here right now so I'll go open the sunroof before it cools down
Thanks Man!
wow i still have a log on to this site...yehawwwwwwwww,

been a long winter.....but summer is on its way !!
Same exact problem for me too... just opens fully during the daytime it seems...at night I can never get it opened all the way.
Ya sorry, iono if it's a hot and cold thing. But it ONLY happens after 10 at night. It's pissing me off, I don't like leaving it all the way open cuz of those damn bugs!
Anyways, my mechanic was lost on this one, he's never heard or seen somehting like that, so I'm gonna go to a Chevy dealer to find out WTF is going on.
Guys, for all of us, pray to GOD that it's an easy fix and doesn't cost much!!!
Same problem here. Someone suggested it was that resisitor module near the motor. anyone know for certain? 99Z here as well.

probably the contraction of metal when it gets cold.

Same problem here. It originally started as only opening partially when it was cooler outside. Now sometimes is won't shut all the way either.
i agree with bortsy... the car heats up, expands, giving the sunroof room to open lol.

98' Pontiac Sunfire SE
It pops up and starts to slide back. That makes me think that it isn't that the sunroof can't slide back, but the electrical components that control it are affected by the temperature. Maybe bad solder joints or faulty control components. Does anyone know what controls the sunroof? Is there a small control board under the button between the liner and the roof?
I had the same problem 2 years ago on my 98Z.
Here is how to fix it.
Remove rearview mirror/sunshades and drop the front of the roof covering to expose the sunroof motor.
unscrew and remove the motor.
you will notice a little switch that is near the lobes on the gears. this is a positioning switch. It tells the motor what position the roof is in.
The plastic part of the switch wears and causes the roof to not fully open/close. or to work in different temps.
The fix
On each side of the switch there is a 1 rivit that holds it to the motor assembly. Drill out one the rivits and make the hole a bit bigger.
You will now notice that you can pivit the switch closer to the gear. This will make up for the wear in the switch.
once the switch is adjusted replase the rivit with a small nut/bolt and tighten.
If adjusted property problem fixed and reinstall motor. you should also be able to make fine adjustements once the motor is put back in.
I hope this helps..it will kae more sense once the motor is in your hands.
