I just bought a sunfire for my son and it has a bad motor (rod & head cracked).
Its a project for us to repair and customize. The motor is not a HO.
So has anyone put a newer 2.2 or 2.4 in place of a 2.3?
In the past I've done stuff like this and I just used the motor, trans, harnesses, computer ect ...
Is there any years or motors that wont fit or mount up.
Any help would be great
thanks
If the car is a Sunfire GT with the 2.3L I am pretty sure that you can swap in a HO quad 4 without too much hassle. They had 180hp over the 150(?) in the 2.3. If you were to swap in a 2.4 you would need the wiring and PCM from the donor car because the 2.3 is OBDI where as the 2.4L is OBDII. I personally wouldn't recommend swapping in a 2.2 if it is a GT because that would take away from the sportiness of the GT. I say find yourself a HO quad and put that in. As far as the years that would fit I am not really sure. I believe any 2.3L DOHC, HO or not, would work providing you bought the engine mounts for the sunfire.

ok I found most of the answers for the swaps of going newer in the gen 3 forum, as far as the harness, computer ect...
So I'm pretty sure I will use a 2.3 of some sort.
How about info for the differant 2.3's, HO's, model years
Thanks
you can run the 2.4 engine without having to rewire or change anything. The 2.3 and 2.4 are the same engine when you know them. Use the 2.3 sensor that's all.
If you need another 2.3 and don't want to change the chip to run the Ho engine, I suggest you find a 92 Lo engine. They had a bit more power (160hp) and will drop right in.
89-92 Ho had 180hp @ 6200rpm and 160lbs @ 5200rpm
93 Ho had 175hp @ 6200rpm and 160lbs @ 5200rpm
94 Ho had 170hp @ 6200rpm and 160lbs @ 5200rpm
Can be found in the GA, Calais, Beretta Gtz, Achieva
91-92 W41 had 190hp @ 6800rpm and 160lbs @ 5200rpm
93 W41 had 185hp @ 6800rpm and 160lbs @ 5200rpm
Can be found in some Calais 442 and in the Achieva Scx
