How are the engine and trans in the 98 cavs. taken out? i'm hoping its not out the bottom. and any helpful tips?
disconnect all wiring, remove radiator hoses, drain radiator, etc. pull mounts. engine comes out from the top. the best step-by-step of engine removal should be taken from a Chilton's or Hayne's manual, available at any auto parts store from between ten and fifteen bucks.

The whole driveline assembly should come out the bottom.
so do i have to disconnect the engine from the trans to get it out the top?
it is usually much easier to. its not too much more to take out the bell housing bolts and break the motor from the tranny. it also makes it much easier to take out since it would be very tight to take out at the same time if it is even possible. good luck... im in the process of puting mine back in now... its some work.... one good idea is to mark every plug with masking tape and write on them what its for when disconnecting all the wiring.. this will save you some major headaches and time.
I pulled and installed my engine with the auto tranny from the top. It's a pain but not impossible.
its a much better idea to disconnect the driveline items from the transmission then disconnect transmission from the motor then lift the motor out. experience has proven this to be true.
