After reading a butt-load of info mainly the 2.3 Quad on the 2.4. Yes I am aware that I have a L61 and not an LD9, but many say that the Quads exhaust manifold outflows any header made for that car and it got me thinking....would the same hold true for the exaust mani on the L61 if I have it extuded and honed? If this isn't dumb enought I was also thinking that GM sells one already done for the LSJ head and if it is a direct bolt on to my head. Now I know that this is probably a dumb subject for most and most will say "just spend the money on a header and be done w/ it" but I love the way my exhaust sounds right now and dont want to add any unneeding raspyness if the net HP gain is like 1 or 2 hp.
If the header is the way to go, what do you guys reccomend? Im not asking for customer service or what not but what flows better then others and who has a better design/built header. I know that the Pacesetter is a good header but im looking more for what people think of others such as the Tsudo or the DC Sports header....all opnions are appreciated.
And before I get the Newb Search posts, this is more or less for the guys who are doing an acutal serious N/A build and not just simple bolt ons to have more fun...I want a good flowing header that will produce good numbers and will compliment my future mods well.
Future mods will include an PnP'd head and LZM tri flow cams...
thanks in advance for anyone that helps.
Pacesetter is a @!#$ty header... lets get that straight... you buy that when you want to say "I have a header, arent I cool?"
Now, extrude honing is expensive, and you're still not going to get the benefits of what a header is supposed todo on an n/a motor, scavenge. Sure, it'll flow more, but its not worth the cash you're going to spend.
The tsudo header isnt bad, I have one. The flanges were nowhere near straight on mine since the dumb@!#$s didnt mill the flange after welding but otherwise, its quite nice. It still works, but expect some sealing issues with it unless you get the flanges milled.
There's only one header out there that will truely maximize power, and its the iPerformance/Stans/Izuzu or whatever header, and its about $800... and its not even stainless.
Thank you Owen, i was hoping for a responce from you, I've looked at pictures of the DC Sports header and its pretty much the same length as the stock manifold just in header form, any word on those?
Also isnt the Tsudo just a copy of the RKSport header? if it is do you think the flange on the RKSport header would be milled?
any new numbers on ur motor yet, 1/4 or HP wise....and thanks for the help, its greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure, crappy flanges are kinda par for the course when it comes to headers... and a tsudo would probably be cheaper than an rk even after you let a machinest at it... getting it to seal isnt hard, just have to be anal about torquing the bolts repeatedly after heat cycles. I've had no problems in 4 months now, and never got the flange's machined.
No new numbers for me, last time at the track I struggled to get the car running right after installing 30# injectors. All the money is going into turbo stuff. Car is going back into streetable prep this weekend.
thanks owen, cash flow right now for me sucks being a college kid, but if you end up selling your header that you have let me know cuz i may scrouge up some cash and buy it.
and again thanks for the help.
Shut up Owen.
Anyways Owen is right, extrude honing is expensive. And as far as the sealing issues go he is right again, because most of those aftermarket headers are made by machines, they weld on them, and dont mill the flange and the heat causes them to be uneven.
And Owen is also man pretty.
There is also another option, that I've yet to see anyone do, make there own header. Using the
exhaust flange from Car Customs and the tubing and collector from
Headers by Ed, you can make a tuned header, that will match the power band you operate in. You will need to or have someone cut and weld the tubing to fit your car, weld the tubing to the flange and collector and surface mill the flange after welding. Follow the procedures for designing and building the header and you'll have a match for your needs.
Thank you MadJack...ive been looking all over for places that sell the flanges and collectors. Thank you very much
