i searched and maybe because i dont know much about motors is why i cant find my answer but anyway im in the middle of swapping in a new motor for a project car. i was working on the new motor (ld9) and removed the intake manifold to put on the 2.3 manifold. after removing the intake manifold i noticed that one of the ports has alot of white chalk inside of it. I dont know what this means or if anything is actually wrong with the motor. What would be the best way to remove all of this from the ports? Again i dont know much about motors so flame away if its an easy answer, i searched but i honestly didnt know what to search for.
has the new motor been sitting? and if so for how long
Don't you bottom out?
- Yes I do
Chalk inside the ports of the manifold or the ports in the head? "Chalky" buildup/residue is usually from when aluminum oxidizes. So if the motor has been sitting around for a loooonnggg time, then you could see a chalky residue inside the ports of the head (as well as inside the combustion chamber, if either set of valves have been left open). If the engine was just sitting around for a year or more, I would look over the internals as well.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.
i honestly dont know how long its been sitting since i got the motor from a yard. overall its very clean and everything was still intact when i got the motor plus all the holes were covered with duct tape and plugs to prevent anything from getting into the motor.. the white chalk was in the ports of the head. once i removed the intake manifold i was able to see it. 3 of the 4 ports look fine. what would be the best way to remove it?
Shifted wrote:Yeah, if its dusty chalk, then its just aluminum oxidizing. If its white/yellow gunky dry build up, then it may be a head gasket.
would pulling the spark plugs out and checking them for the same residue narrow it down, if it is the head gasket, etc.
^ Not necessarily. Spark plugs are supposed to be chalky-white after use. The head gasket would have to be REALLY bad in order to fill the plug with oil. The tell-tale sign of a bad head gasket is the coolant, but in his case, he doesn't have the cooling system to look into for milk chocolate.
