Removing Intake Manifold Cover

I dont think this is the right name for what i want... but I want to remove this box covering my intake manifold, and put an air intake hose directly to it...

Can anyone guide me on how to remove this, if it's a good/bad idea, any bad things that may happen if i do?

That's the air inlet tract plennum. Air that enters the tract collects there to build-up in abundance to help keep the engine from becoming short of breath. It's the essentially same rule that determines plennum size in intake manifold design. However, knowing the factory the purpose of this large box's design is probably more likely to reduce noise, a big factor these days with the new car buyer market. But if you wish to create a more direct path from the filter box to the throttle body, and don't mind the moaning noise of the unsilenced in-rushing air, I'd say go ahead. Just remember to keep the path of the tract as smooth & direct as possible. And while you're at it, look into fabbing a head wind collecting fresh-air intake system. It may not get you as much power as you may desire (But then, what intake/filter assembly will?) but designed right it will help your car's fuel efficiency to a notable degree.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

A What?

I'm more looking into increasing my air flow as I just increased my exhaust. If i wont gain much, I'll just put a sr intake from the box.
Also, is removing the air filter housing a large deal? I read in a few other posts about moving the master and slave cyliders. Something I have to worry about in the Eco?

just undo bolts, and if it looks illogical with the case is off, then put the case back on. Doesnt look like u need ot move anything maybe just the clutch fluid res.

A Ram-air (A.K.A.: Fresh-air intake) system. It'll also help your engine breathe easier while going down the road. And since the filter housing didn't grow there, I'd say removing it won't be a big deal. Relocating it is another story. At this point you're looking at fabbing a system anyway so unless the thought of the work doesn't scare you, you might as well just take the easy (Weenie) way out and just install some pre-fabbed aftermarket intake tract. And since you're probably looking for more power (Like most here are) I'd suggest getting a CAI system. Remember: Cooler air equals more power!

I've looked into cold air intakes, but i've heard that the gain doesn't weigh the hassle...
Ram air sounds good to me... but you need a special hood and advanced air intake system for that, right?

If you need help removing that then you shouldn't be doing it yourself.

I still have the ducting left that takes the air from behind the headlight and directs it to the airbox. Only thing is that my airbox and tubes have been replaced with a K&N Typhoon. Im not sure how i can get it to breath easier w/o cutting a hole in the hood and mounting the filter outside the car.

My cuzin has a 02' WS-6 Trans Am. He might get a few HP out of his ram air at 80mph+, but its more of show. Im not sure if anyone can make a better "ram air" setup than GM did on the LS1 Trans Am.
