2.4L Building List- Please Read and Help Me
Monday, March 17, 2008 6:25 AM
I just got back from my first day at scca and man was it fun. I have never had such a fun time in my car, not to mention all of the other cars that were there are sick. Ok well here is my problem, I pretty much blew my motor up and it needs to be rebuilt. So here is what I was thinking. I am going to pick up a 2.4 from the JY, but I need to know what I can do to make it a very fast on the track. I was thinking about using the 2.3 cams and also the 2.3 intake manifold. But then I was thinknig of doing a supercharger, so I am a little confused on what I should do. I have read about a 086 head, whats does this come off of, and will it bolt to a 2.4. If you can post any information that would be awesome as I need to have the new motor in in less than 3 weeks, the race is in 4 weeks. Please let me know if you can help me out. Basically I need to know what parts I can use and whats works the best. Oh and one more thing, I was reading about a 2.3 oil pump mod, why switch to this? Does it flow better??

i would find out just how much you can change and remain in the class you've been running in first...

Honestly, I dont really care about class right now. I am more in it for fun. For the 086 head. This is a 2.3 head correct. Now is this out of a Ho or Lo, or does it even matter. Also whats so great about the 086 head? Can I just swap the 2.3 head on the 2.4?

well swapping in 2.3 parts can be very time consuming....

such as the 2.3 oil pump swap, you need to do some mods to the block and also gather all the parts for the swap. Good luck finding the baffle tray...try the junk yard

also the best cams to run are HO cams but this also takes modification because you will need to use the HO cam housings and see what to do about the cps and what to do with the hex power steering. Theres some guy on here who has the GM test engine's cams that have HO cams for the 2.4...LUCKY BASTARD I SAY. But the secret "LO" cams from the 2.3 are a easy swap

Do you plan to boost or atleast do some good port n' polish? IF NOT then the HO intake manifold is not for you.

But you got a lot of work ahead of you so im not sure if 3 weeks is going to cut it

GMR has got nothing on this

You need to be concerned about this. When you do cams, or a super charger it puts you in a much higher class with cars you are not going to compete with. Yes you are in it for fun, but when you are getting slaughtered the fun leaves.

Why did your motor blow? I would be more concerned with that. From what I have seen with SCCA focus more on the suspension and handling of the car, the 2.4 has plenty of power for it's class, you get it to ride like it is on rails and stop you will be set.

I ran it low on oil, and i was testing the new suspension, so when i went around a turn hard, the oil pump ran dry and the top end was starved at 5k for around 2 sec, so its tapping pretty bad. And since yesterday leaving it in 2 nd at 5grand, did not help. It has 180k so its time anyways for a rebuild. I guess then I wont put a blower on it, probably just a Ho manifold. As far as the Ho cam swap, I though that it bolted right in, no mods needed. I thouhg that you take the cams out and put the 2.3 ones in, is this not true?? Would it be easier to start with a 2.3 bottom end and then put a 2.4 top end on. or should I just use the 2.4 and buy the performance parts for that? What all do they have for this motor. I have seen valves, valve guides, oil pumps, head gaskets. As far as the springs, can I use the 2.3 springs with out modification. I am just trying to see what interchanable and what performance parts are avaiable.

BTW here is the cams i was going to buy- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-4-LD9-Secret-Cam-Swap-Cavalier-Sunfire-Grand-AM_W0QQitemZ200207796888QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item200207796888

How can I tell the difference between the a HO and LO motor. At my yard there are plenty of 2.3 with the aluminum manifolds but none have the cover on the top.

If you guys can just give me a heads up on what I should plan on doing that would be awesome. I know with engine out, I want to change the flywheel and clutch. As far as the motor if you can just help me with whats a easy swap with the 2.3 I would really appreciate that.

the 'secret cam swap' is a direct bolt in app. no mods just need the cams from the ebay link you provided. the HO cam swap is much more difficult and needs work. you can machine your intake tower to fit the cam and have a hex power steering drive pressed on and use the 2.3 exhaust tower. i would just do a couple quick searches and you can find alot of what your looking for.

If you are going to be autocrossing it and using the stock 2.4 oiling system I would fill it about a 1/2 quart past the full mark. Even with it at the full mark if you have take a hard turn you might loose oil pressure for a second. After seeing the problems Paul tjepkes has had with spec/fidanza flywheels there is no way in hell I would put one in my car. As for a clutch I would reccomend a clutchmasters fx300. If you do the secret cams they will just drop right in and noone is going to know if you do not say anything.

I had a fidanza flywheel in my previous sunfire, it worked awesome. I have heard that spec clutch suck, I used a exedy in my last car. i think a nice clutch like exedy or centerforce would be nice. Ok so the cams from ebay will work, great. Now the difference between the HO and LO manifolds is what?? Anythings else I can use off a 2.3 that will bolt on, also is the new intake manifold a pretty close swap, I remember a member making phanolic spacers, he still around??

The HO has a bigger Plenum or what ever it is called, it is more for boost. The LO is a little smaller.

the stock 2.3 HO with the HO manifold doesn't have boost, it certainly doesn't need any to put out the 180hp it makes stock. the thing is... it was DESIGNED for that engine, the head out flows a stock 2.4 so therefore a bigger and better flowing intake manifold can be utilized.

but yes, for a nice bolt-on for a semi-stock engine with no head porting and tuning i would say the LO is the better option.

I read on here that the HO intake was more for boost application and NA should just stick with the LO.

on a 2.4 yeah.... hasnt been 100% no doubt absolutely proven though.

but the HO manifold originally came on an n/a car... so keep that in mind.

The HO was proven to be designed for a different power band. It has nothing to do with boost.

Hey Speedracer what's the pn of the LT1 afpr that you used?

Aeromotive LT1 FPR - 13106 (www.speed-eng.com)

It doesnt fit between the end of the fuel rail and the timing housing, so you also need a 90* AN fitting for it to work. Forget the part number off the top of my head, for the one I used.

Sorry to thread jack, but for my turbo build do you need an aftermarket FPR even though i'm using a 4.3 Blazer fuel pump, 36-42lb/h injectors, and HPTuners?

Re: 2.4L Building List- Please Read and Help Me
Wednesday, March 26, 2008 12:12 PM
All depends, will stock pressure and those injectors supply enough fuel for the air that's going in? As far as I understand no mater what size pump you have the fpr will just bypass everything above stock pressure until it eventually can't handle it and blows a diaphragm.

FAST2.4 P

Good luck with your build. The 086 head requires some adapting of head gaskets, water and oil passages to match the block. It only came on 2.3L HO and W41 engines. There was a really good post on this a while back, just search for it. If you decide you want one I have one complete with cam towers and HO cams for sale, just let me know.

I'm surprised I don't see this much in here.. but Mantapart has TONS of performance goodies for the 2.4 and 2.3.. AND the 2.2. Check it out http://www.mantapart.com/ I've posted this link so much in the past hour it may look like I am spamming.. but seriously I am not, I'm not making any money with these links

Go buy a W41 QUAD and put it in your car.. problem solved hehe

The I have only bought two things from manta part. the first time I didnt know too much about anything. I bought the light weight underdrive pully, they sent me the 2.3 ho pully and still charged me the same price. I tried to send it back for a refund but no dice. This was back in about 2000 or so. I also bought their higher compression valve springs this past summer. Their service has seemed to improve a bit (for me) since the first time I delt with them. If you do go with them I wish you luck.
