Head work questions
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 9:48 AM
Just finishing up the porting and polishing work on my 2.4 Head

Going to be running HO Cams and Lifters so i ordered

New Clevite HO Valve Springs

HO Retainers and Rotators

First question is about the exhaust side. Below is a picture of the stock valve "rotator" and the new HO valve rotator i just got

The stocker 2.4 one is just a stationary metal piece.

Do i just go ahead and replace them all with the new rotators?

Next question is about valve guides. What do the brass ones do? Where do i get them? Do i need to replace the stockers?

Also how about the cam tower gaskets, im getting the Felpro 2.4 Top end gasket kit, can i use the 2.4 Cam tower gaskets on 2.3 towers?

Thanks

Bottom of the spring sits on it

I could be wrong it not be a rotator but whatever its called the bottom of the Valve spring sits on it

Retainer on top and what i pictured on the bottom

The flat washer type rotator go one the exhaust side. The bigger bearing style go on the intake side. So to sum it up flat rotators on exhaust side taller bearing style rotators intake side.

You don't replace the exhaust sides you just use the stock 2.4l metal flat piece.

Intake side you can also use just the stock 2.4l rotators they look the same as the new ones you have.

So going off you pic

The rotator on the left goes on the exhaust side.

Rotator on the right goes on the intake side.

sorry for repeating everything.

If you have any more questions just send me a PM.

Ok so i will just re use the flat style on the exhaust side again

Thanks Paul

Can't use the 2.3 Rotators cause of the Height? Just wondering cause i have a full set of 8 for intake side and 8 for exhaust side

on a 2.3 they use rotators on the intake and the exhaust.
You need to have them in both side to get the proper spring seat pressure, the spring you are installing was designed to have the rotator used.

on a 2.3 the installed height of the valve spring(spring alone, not including the rotator or retainer) is approx 1 3/8" (sorry for being crude I used a tape measure.
install it in your 2.4 head, what is the installed height?

as far as guides go, there is no need to replace the guides if they measure in spec.

I am not 100% on this, ask paul for sure, but I think you need to be running the 2.3L cam towers if you are going to be running the HO valve springs.

On a high performance application, you honestly don't want the valve to rotate. At high RPM, the valve could wear out the keepers or vice versa. You should be ok, but check your installed spring height, which is the distance between the spring pad and the bottom of the retainer. You may have to install shims under the new spring pad to make up for that missing length, and the spring won't have enough pressure to function properly. That's the most technical insight I can offer you.

95s don't use rotators on the exhaust side. also I ran 2.3l springs on my 2.4l all last summer with the rotators on the intake side and the flat washer style on the exhaust.
no problems.

I had problems running 2.4l lifters with 2.3l springs.
when the springs compress and the lifter is being pushed down from the lift on the cam the two make contact and will cause problems.
