I just put new rings and a headgasket on my 96 2.4 and it has started smoking extremely bad from in the timing housing. I noticed it at a stop light, a little smoke rolling out from under the hood. Pulled over and shut it off. Then i popped the hood and smoke was rolling from the rear cam tower housing where it meets the timing cover. I opened the oil cap it started to all come out of the that. Any ideas?
Thanks

did you
a. gap the rings right?
b. make sure that all the rings gaps were not lined up?
c. replace the timing tensioner?
yes, yes and no

Was this a complete motor rebuild? Was the block machined? Honed?
FU Tuning
When you change rings you should have the block machined to de glaze it
This aids in breaking in the rings
If you just changed the rings and did nothing else to a 12 year old block then it was a waste of time really
PCV system is not working properly.

All stock...........lol.
Yes the cylinders were deglazed but I have never had a problem with pcv before why would it start all of a sudden?
"sometimes the respect is more important..."
perhaps from increased blow by caused by unseated rings??
because its a car and somtimes things like that pcv system fail unexpectedly
The same thing happened on my Trans Am. I was getting alot of smoke pouring out of the oil filler. Reving it would produce more smoke. Turns out I had to bad pistons and the rings were shot in them. Compression was very low on those cylinders. Do a compression test and see what that says. Would be easier than tearing the entire motor apart. Sounds like it's more than just a PCV system if you can see and smell smoke coming from under neath the hood when your driving it.
will be doing a compression test after work hopefully i dont get bad news.
what should it be for the 2.4 with fresh rings anyway?

the important thing is they are all the same.......I dont have a spec on what it should be though.
