When replacing the cylinder head on a 95 2.3L Cavalier do I have to remove the timing chain housing or can I just remove the cam sprockets and work the head off without disturbing the timing chain housing?
No.

um...just so you know..the cams in the housings are bolted to not only the housing itself but gears that are connected to the timing chain..you MUST remove the timing AND housing to take everything off without breaking it...if you have trouble getting it back in time or dont know how at all just ask when you get there...well help you thru it
Thanks guys. It's just that I saw a picture on another website (http://quad4forums.com/forums/) and it showed how one guy pulled the head without removing the timing chain housing and I figured that if he could do it then someone here must be able to do it also. But photos can lie and the guy didn't provide any explanation as to how he got the head off without removing the timing chain housing.
^^^ He may have removed the head without removing the aluminum housing that bolts to the block (the 2 bolts under the timing housing would be a pain to get to though). The cover has to come off though, because like scott said, you have to remove the cam gears first....but why you would even choose not to remove the complete housing over loosening a few more bolts is beyond me.
I have no signiture
Here's the link to what I was refering to;
http://www.quad4forums.com/chat/chat.php?connect=1 The guy didn't even remove the manifolds. Maybe he works at a flat rate shop and knows secrets that we don't. Still, I'd be afraid to do it that way for fear of something leaking when I put it back together.
i cant see any pics...but your on crack if you think you can take the head off without removing the manifolds..both of them are bolted to the head..so wtf...and the cam towers are bolted to the timing housing..and you cant even GET to those bolts without removing the timing gears cus they cover the bolts....simple answer..cant be done .... /thread
i have the pacesetter header and didnt need to remove the exhaust manifold when doing the head..
on the timing cover.. you can move it out of the way but dont have to take it right out of the engine bay

I think I explained it wrong Scott. He actually detached the intake and exhaust manifolds from the head but left them sitting under the hood connected to everything else and he also removed the bolts from under the timing gears. Have a look at the pic and you'll see what I mean, if the pic comes through.
the cover IS off the block...... Granted to did not "remove" it from the car... it is still off the block.

OK, I'm a newbie and a little confused here. Does the inner timing chain housing cover have to come completely out of the car, for gaskets/seal replacement or anything else, when replacing the cylinder head? I have to replace the head on my car in the next few days and need some solid advice.
the cover has to come out of the engine bay if you're going to replace the seal that goes between the cover and the block near the oil pan...otherwise it can just sit there in the engine bay. the water pump gear is really the only thing that is going to hold the timing cover in the engine bay...all the other things that hold it in place are simple to take out
always replace the timing cover/cam tower seals ... i didnt do the lower block seal until the 3rd time i had my engine apart. if you're going to replace that lower seal then you want the timing cover out of the engine bay.
if you get the gasket set you'll see it has a whole bunch of things. if you dont replace them all, there is an element of risk of something leaking.

I certainly want to do this job right the first time and that's why I asked for advice here. You guys are great. Thank you.
