086 head swap
Monday, January 12, 2009 8:12 PM
I know a lot of people were asking me to do a dyno run with my head swap and stock cams. Realistically i cant afford to do that. However i found this on quad4forums that i thought was interesting. They are running the secret cams, however most people speculate these cams do not do much more than shift you power band to a higher rpm range. I specifically remember reading a thread where a member put in the secret cams and ran the same times in the quarter as stock cams consistently, claiming less bottom end and more top end.

Anyways here is the link.

086 Head writeup

If the numbers are true that is more horsepower than the m45 and less money spent even with the cams.

nice find, however it is not more power than the m45 is capable of but its a damn nice improvement and i cant wait to do it myself.

thing is.. back then HPT didnt exist, it was either stand alone or stock tune so these gains have got to be a hell of a lot more substantial with proper tuning.

so... how many miles do you have on your swap? any issues whatsoever?

And I should've been drown in the rivers I've found in token lost...

I do agree the m45 has much more power potential.

Id say I have roughly 1500 miles on my car since the swap. All of my troubles have been mostly my fault. First I didn't reset the timing chain tensioner properly so as soon as the motor started running i had to tear it back down. The it started making this terrible noise around 3200 rpm, turns out my torque converter bolts started to come loose. So I re-torqued them. That was a tough problem to diagnose, at first i thought I cracked my flexplate somehow. Now it has been up and running for a while and I have a coolant leak near the water neck. So im going to take all the fittings out and re-seal them and put in a new water neck gasket. Its just been stupid stuff that seems could have been avoided if I would have been more careful during the swap.

I used HPtuners to adjust timing and fix any knocking issues. Once it gets a little warmer Im going to install cams and hook up the wideband and get my AFR straight. I have HO cams but I am still unsure of what im doing with the intake side due to clearance issues. I also have a vortech throttle body from a chevy truck im planning on installing with another HO manifold. I also have some gsxr 1000 throttle bodies that im thinking about toying around with.

They car is definitely more fun to drive now. Cant wait til these other mods.

so what cams does it currently have installed? and did you happen to do a clearance check with them? what pistons do you have?

i know the 2.3 HO pistons only have two valve reliefs, are the intake valves closer or something? i cant remember which ones are larger but thats probably why, right?

Currently I am running the stock 2.4 cams and stock bottom end. People told me the Secret cams would fit no problem so I didn't even bother clearancing the small stock 2.4 cams. In hind sight I wish I did so that I knew how much room I have to play with. Plans are to go with a built bottom end eventually but stock will have to do for now.

Everyone speculates the two Valve reliefs on the HO piston are because they do get closer to the piston. The intakes are the larger valves.

Appearently according to one of my previous threads one member claimed to have put HO cams in with this swap and stock 2.4 pistons. He also said his timing gear came loose and bent all his valves. He had no clearance measurements and Im not sure Im willing to take the word of one person for my motor.

well.... i know its not an 086 but paul tjepkes has plenty of room with HO cams and 10.5:1 pistons... it an ld9 head though.

your profile says "LSJ" header... what gives? you chop the flange off of one and weld on a 2.3 one or something?

theres a place out in ohio (guy is like risencheck) or something on Q4F that is willing to make us 3rd gen 086 swapped guys header's. i have a deal brewing with him now, im going to send him my rk sport header for the ld9 and he's going to duplicate the shape and size and make his own version for the 086. not to bad at $450, but the shipping for everything and the eventual jet hot coating is going to drive the price way up. similar to what scott had to pay to have his custom header done for his stroker ace.

With the LD9's head I believe it has shorter valves that sit higher in the head. It also has i believe a 62cc combustion chamber while the quad head has a 40cc chamber. So my understanding is the valve physically sits closer to the piston.

For my header I kind of have a frankenstien thing going on. I bought a clearwater cylinder head. The exhaust ports were pretty small oval shaped ports roughly the same size as an LD9. Clearwater says this is part of their recasting process to avoid the common head cracking problem. Of course they neglect telling you this when they sell the head. My machinist hogged as much meat as he possibly thought could be beneficial out of them and port matched them to the header. I then re-drilled the flange and bolted it on.

I just bought one of those brand new Clearwater 086 heads as a back up for my turbo build. How is your holding up?

I has held up pretty good from what I can tell. Ive been in the process of taking it off since the snow started in december lol. Im putting on a spare 2.4 head that is ported polished w/ stainless valves on the engine currently in the car. But ultimately by the end of summer I plan on using this head on my built bottom end. I needed it off the car to measure for some custom valve pockets. So I will let everyone know how its held up once its off and I can inspect it.
