Has anyone tried to run an ecotec in a 2.4 car with the 2.4 ecu and wiring? I would think it would solve a lot of problems. Same firing order, if im not mistaken same amount of teeth for the crank sensor, you could adapt a 2.4 throttle body if you really wanted. 2.2 coils swap and there solves the iginition problems. it would make tuning for boost easier since the 2.4 reflash is hptuners compatible. and you wouldnt need to rewire the whole car. Granted you might need to extend or shorten some wires in the harness but it cant be as bad as rewiring a whole entire car.
Im sure someone will give me an explanation to why it cant be done rather quickly but i haven't read about anyone trying it so i thought id throw it out there.
If you are talking about replacing an LD9 with an eco, all the wiring, BCM, PCM, and such must be switched over. Believe me, if it was this easy, everyone would be doing it this way, and I too would have an eco in my sunfire. Yeah, It just isn't fair...
Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
Yeah Ive read all that a 1000 times. Thnx for the info though. I guess I was more curious if anyone actually ever tried to run it off the ld9 stuff and why it didnt work.
First.... 2.4 Eco is drive by wire. Second it has VVT, but not sure if it's ECU controlled or oil pressure controlled. I also believe that the 2.4 Eco has 52 teeth on the reluctor wheel while the 2.4 LD9 doesn't. The 2.4 Eco won't match up to the LD9 tranny, and the 2.4 Eco/2.4 Eco tranny combo won't fit (without modification) in our engine bay.
Short answer: It won't work.

Ummm, Ron, i think he was talking about swapping a L61 into a LD9 car w/o swapping the wiring.

Yes this is what i was talking about. Just an idea tossing around in my head one day when i was bored.
The 2.4 ecotec would be wayyyyy to expensive ant timely for me to even consider thinking about. Ive read multiple threads about people wanting to do that and how it just isnt doable without rediculous modifications and wiring.

That's my point, the LD9 ECU doesn't have provisions to run a fly-by-wire engine, decode the crank, control the VVT, etc. Even if it did physically fit in...

Take a second and reread what Tinkles wrote, Ron.
Cory is talking about
swapping an L61 engine (as in the engine found in Jbodies) into a car with
LD9 wiring, this way boosted ECOTECs would be able to tune speed density with HPTuners. I have actually asked this question several times in the past without getting a clear answer. The only sensors I know to be different are the TPS and knock sensor. The TPS is an easy fix by swapping the throttle body to a standard gm 3-wire (LD9, Quad4, LS1, Northstar, etc.), but I'm not too sure what you could do with the knock sensor. If it's a 2-wire, you might not have to do anything other than splice in the ECO knock sensor replacing the LD9's.
I have no signiture
No biggie, we all have off days.
This would be interesting. I in no way have the knowledge to comment, but i am for sure going to watch and see where this goes.

do it and let us know how it turns out
01' Z24 5 speed

T4 Turbocharged
Built LD9
HP Tuners
It'll be a while before I would try this. The motor in my vert has 183,000 miles and and is running rougher and eating more oil week by week. I was gonna take my 95 2.3 block and build it up but I decided I might go stroker with the Z. Auto Ecos are a dime a a dozen at the pick n pull and i dont want a 2.4 in this car i want it to be a lil different. If i can swap the 97 ecu and put the eco in and get it running at the same time atleast its known it can be done. then those who wanted tunable speed density would know the 2000+ 2.4 ecu can run an eco. Helping myself and others at the same time. But like i said it would be a while, after my vert engine bites the dust.
hell if somone has a motor and trans that they arnt using i would try it in my 96 just to see if it worked and as for the knock sensor you could just use the ld9 one

my kill list:a geo metro and a mac semi wow did i kill that thing
as long as all the sensor plugs are the same and the eco has the same sensors i dont see it being an issue...
but yeah, lengthening wires and that kind of stuff would be easy.
And I should've been drown in the rivers I've found in token lost...
i was planning on trying it when i get off school this summer, motor and wiring is waiting at home
i dont think it would be hard at all.
well you can always change sensors and/or plugs

some body try it i wanna know now

whats the big deal with the eco anyway?
theres nothing ive seen to warrant the need to 'upgrade' from a 2.4.
well other than just simply wanting something new to try...
I believe I can see the future... as I repeat the same routine....
Thats basically it for me. My 2000 Z has the 2.4 and im more than happy with it. Just thinking when the verts motor goes somthing different would be fun. The 2.3 i was gonna use is not too different from a 2.4 so that swap just wouldnt be as entertaining for me.
