just some questions to go over i didnt really understand the answers too..
1. I got a 95 grand am gt with the quad 4 in it and they say the motor has a knock in it so they pulled it and brought it to a machine shop and come to find out the motor was bored .60 over. Now all i have to do is put the motor back in with new bearings right. well i want to make some power out of it since its out, so my main thing i want to do is put a full HO head on it with the cams unless thats not really goin to do anything or is too hard to do. Or should i just find a complete HO motor, i know they have better parts on certain years i just want to kno the best combination for power. Thats my question if i can do that with out major problems or big complications. thanks.
if your car is a manual then i would look for an early 90s HO engine..the 95 has a crappy oil pump, and power robbing balance shafts..not to mention its been a bit too far overbored
its either 30 over or 60 but i want a reliable daily driver that has nuts

buy a new car, and a big can of Planters.
problem solved.
well since my motor is bored and i can get this ho head off a 90 gtz would that work or would i run into problems with the power steering deal that goes on the cam ? thats where i lost
People who have the LD9 Twin Cam and swap to the Quad 4 High Output Intake cam have power steering obstacles to confront. In your case you have a Quad 4 so unless your power steering is not pulley driven off the intake cam then you too have this issue.
Does your intake cam have a pulley on the end driving the power steering?
GMR has got nothing on this
yes is there another way to do it like maybe a 90 power steering pump?
if you already have a pulley on the intake cam driving the power steering then that is NOT a 95 setup..it may be an HO cam already..at the very least it is pre 95
no i dont have a pulley is what i mean i looked at the power steering pump in the car cuz the motor and tranny is out of it at the time and it dont have a pulley on it and it seems like it just bolts directly to the cam tower cuz there was rtv around the outside of it... so what do i do to make a ho head fit, since the ho head i believe 086 HO head has the bigger ports and better cams in it than the LO, could someone verifi this for me please so i know exactly what to get. My friend has a complete gtz ho motor at his house that just needs the head and intake and exhaust put back on and its good to go. But since i stated that the motor i have for it now is bored out .30 over it will probly have more power there than a normal ho so i want to get all the power i can out of this motor that is avable. Bigger bottom end, better flowing head intake and exhaust = more power than the HO or even the w41.. is that close to what im lookin at im hoping for the best right now.... THanks guys i love these engines but dont know as much as i want to about them..
Just swap to the pulley driven power steering pump. No big deal.
First....are you sure you have a GT?
GMR has got nothing on this
the old HO bottom end with a stock bore should yield more power than the 95 engine in your car just due to the fact that it does not have ballance shafts. no ballance shafts=15hp .030 overbore=roughly 5hp. thats just the popular estimate that i have read.
well should i just take the balance shafts out then is that worth it is it possible? also i just need to get a 90 power steering pump right??
you cant just "take the balance shafts out" .. if you decide to remove the balance shafts you would then need to modify the block to mount the older style oil pump...just like the 2.4s do....there is no way around this so dont ask...2 options...A. remove your shafts that have the oil pump built into them and pay a machine shop to mod your block to hold the older style pump......or
B. get an older block that doesnt have balance shafts and already accepts the better pump
get a REAL LG0 QUAD-4 HO.
simple swap, should take less then 48 hours. (including sleep time.)

is there a way to tell an ho to an lo or a w41 cuz i found a early 90s grand am with a quad4 dohc in it and could not tell if it was a ho or not cuz it didnt say but is there other ways to be sure it is a ho?
casting number on the head by the motor mount
8 psi with m62 and IAT under 100
LO engines also have 086 heads sometimes.

Wrong.
Is it still in the car?

8th letter in the VIN will be an " A " ..that makes it highoutput
can usually tell by the intake manifold and size of the crank pulley among other things if you really know your quads , but heres a hint..if the tranny is an auto its an LO...just stick with checking the VIN
thanks guys i did some searching today and only found lo's imagine that lol.
