I have a 1995 2.2 sunfire and i was considering purchasing a short air intake, new headers, and a new exhause with 2.5 inch tubing and a 4 inch muffler. I am a highschool student and have limited money. If i buy and install all of that on my car how much more horsepower and torque can i expect to get out of my engine? car is bone stock at the moment.
On a good day maybe 5-10 HP. You might get more response from the throttle and itll make the butt dyno feel a difference.
only 5-10hp? i read that just a new intake will get about an 8 horsepower gain, are you saying that new headers and exhaust wont make much difference?
Our cars only have one header and yes only a 5-10hp gain. That 8hp number is just something they use to help sell it.

alright i guess i have a new question. since i dont have much money or technical abilities... what kinds of bolt on parts can i get to significantly increase my engines power?
These are very simple mods, and not much should be expected from them. A short intake will only get you about a 2hp gain if that. The 2.2 is an OHV (over head valve) engine and It was designed for economy, not performance. The exhaust won't make a while lot of difference ethier, but it's a good start. I have this same engine in my daily driver as well, but I don't plan on doing a whole lot with it for this reason. Read my profile if you want a few ideas. Read around the forums here, and you will learn quite a bit about these things! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CAR!!

The biggest problem with this motor is the lack of flow in the head and a small cam. If the engine has bad lungs so to say a new intake a free flowing exhaust wont help much. These are more like supporting mods. If you port and polish the head and install 1.6 ratio rockers you will see more gains from the supporting mods. Oversized valves and a different cam would also make a world of difference but also require more money and downtime.
without money you can't do anything that will significantly increase your power. Like Luis said, it will increase your throttle response, but don't expect big gains from bolt ons with your car. But an intake, exhaust and header (not headers
) would be a good place to start for bolt ons.
You have a 95 in my opinion the best route would be to swap in a 2.3 and tinker on that. They have more power stock than the 2.4(LD9) and the 2.2 ecotec.

about how much would that cost?
Well the rocker arms will cost at least $150. Do a search on this site and there is a large thread telling which ones work and which ones dont. Youll need to use the ones from a Small block chevy so also take into account since the 2.2 is a 4 cylinder you can sell half of them and make some money back. As far as head porting I would suggest you read about it, there was a good post on this site a while ago about porting and polishing. A dremel tool shouldnt cost too much along with the bits needed. To have a shop port and polish depends on the shop. a light port and polish could cost as little as $350 but a good one with a valve job could be upwards of $1000. But if you feel you can do it yourself itll probably cost less than $100. Oversized valves will require a valve job and the cost of valves probably $400 or so total and for a cam you could have the stocker reground for like $135 but that involves removing the engine completely.
The best answer to that question is: Go find a machine shop and ask them. Some might charge $500 and some might charge $800. But an easy way to reduce the downtime of your car if you P&P the head is to grab another head from the junkyard and have that one worked on.

I forgot to add, if you have the 3 speed auto in your car, I wouldnt even bother trying to make the car fast. Like I stated earlier: If you stick around this site for awhile, and do some reading, you're gonna learn alot here.

Following on that^, I'd say just get the things that'll improve your fuel-mileage. Stuff like:
Header (4-1 or 4-2-1)
Exhaust (2-1/4 to 2-1/2")
A free-flowing air-filter (K&N drop-in)
A good ignition system (MSD box, coils & wires)
And run a good set of plugs (E3s work well for me!).
After that, then you can try your fabrication skills by making a Fresh-Air Intake system. This basically collects air from the head-wind the car sees as it rolls down the road, and funnels it to the air-filter canister(Box) so the engine gets all the air it could ever want to breathe without laboring for it so much. This alone will really improve throttle response on the highway, where you'll need it most.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
