Patriot Performance or take it to a shop?
Wednesday, April 01, 2009 11:10 PM
Patriot Performance wants $500 and change for a Stage 2 bare head. $600 and change for a Stage 2 fully assembled. I guess the fully assembled comes with +1mm oversize valves, springs, and retainers. Ive been shopping around locally and the best quote I got was $375, which would included porting & polishing, milled, and a valve job for whatever I want. Then ill have to buy +1mm valves for it ($100), springs...etc.

Lets sum it up.

Patriot Performance Stage 2 bare head- $500+
Patriot Performance Stage 2 fully assembled- $600+
Local shop- $375 plus the parts I buy- $500+

I guess im looking at over $500 no matter what.

Any other ideas? How much have you guys paid?

Thanks.

Maybe $1200 is for an Ecotech? I have a 2200.

Dont get the assembled head. $100 is not enough for a decent valvetrain.

Ahhhhh, I wish they were only $600 for an eco head. I'd buy one right now.

I've heard nightmare stories about Patriot heads from a reputable head guy whom was brought Patriot heads for similar apps (BBC & LN2: Similar in design!). He said they were nothing more than just "hogged-out", the results of which were barely more... and sometimes worse... than stock in terms of flow. This required him to do considerable work to correct the errors, including adding filler-putty in spots.

So... In short: Find a used head & a good head guy. It'll be more worth the money when it's done.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

theres arguments back and forth about the patriot head. Theres some people that say its worth it, some say not.

horsepower is the force that determines at what speed you hit the wall, torque is the force that determines how far you take the wall with you after you hit it.
