Planing on doing a Ecotec Engine swap
Friday, April 24, 2009 9:12 PM
Hi all,
Thanks to all in advance for reading .
I know tons of guys have put ecotech swap guides on this forum over the years .
I myself am planing to do the swap into my 1996 2.2l Cavalier .
My Cavalier is just a plain 2.2l w/ 3 speed Automatic .
I just got a rear ended 2003 cavalier for free , it has a 2.2l ecotec and 4 speed automatic .

Now I was searching in all the forums about it and saw tons of posts on how to do this swap .

I was hoping some of you guys could tell me from your experiances , who out there has the best
guides on how to do this swap .

Thanks again to all out there
Ryan

Honestly, if you are going to the trouble of a cross-generation Jbody ENGINE SWAP...taking the time to search, print out the threads about it and reading through them would be the simplest of starting points. Some might even argue if you have to ask, you aren't capable of doing something like this, sorry to say this but maby one out of 20 people that make posts like these actually go through with it. You gotta the research, no-one will just hand you the info. Most difficult part will be the rewiring as you need to strip everything that's plastic out of the interior, and remove seats, carpet, etc...then do the same with the donor car..remove the entire chassis wiring harness from the donor car and install it in your '96 cav...this is time consuming and tedious as you don't want to damage any of the wiring. Automatic is easier I think since you don't have to fab up new tranny mounts. You'll need to swap the center consoles. Wiring up the engine wiring harness, ECU, etc. You'll have to pull your 96 fuel tank/sender and use the newer one, assuming it's usable considering it has a rear-end hit...that's a very simplistic explanation of the work you have to do. Good luck, it can be done, you just have to be careful, methodical, and have lots of spare time

There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.

I would seriously look into just fixing up the 03'. more work... time.... etc into the 96' swap. But i guess it depends on how bad that 03' was wrecked.... if the 03' is in order of some body work... just work on it. IMO

Usually if a car is written off or salvage, it's going to be not worth it to fix as it will cost more then just buying a similar car... or in many cases it cannot be fixed to be safe to drive, or simply can't be fixed depending on how bad the damage is, therefore it can't be insured.

Thanks for the replies .
And FastFireTwoTwo is write the car is way to much to fix .
Plus to me my 1996 is my first car so it has that little sentamental value to it .

I do get what you guys mean though and I know its alot of work ,
beacuse from 1999 up are totally different wiring systems .

I was still doing my own research , its just I was hoping that
some people out there could give some feedback that may have done
a swap already:; to say like this post help out the most to them .
Or this guys pictures were a big help .

And if not its ok , but it was still just worth a shot .
Normally it never hurts to ask .

Thanks again
Ryan

First the doing a pre 2000 Ecotec swap is not that hard seeing as he has the complete car. If you know what you are doing it could be done in a weekend. Truly it is plug and play. In the 3 generation forum there is a post about doing the swap, I believe most of the info is in there. If not post in it and ask the questions you need. I also agree reading every post out there and gather your own info.

If you have a complete donor car for free, that's excellent... Some people are saying it's easy, well it might be easy to them, but if you don't have much experience with cars, it won't be easy. I think you should go for it if you have the time and help. If you don't have any help and don't know much about cars then I don't think you should do it. Doing your own research first and then if you have questions asking, people will respect you more and be more willing to help since you are showing you are serious about doing the swap On a side note, the sentimental thing I understand, but really... starting fresh is exciting too and you can make your new car every bit as good as the old one and better.

Why not just buy a L61 ecotec motor, and chassis/engine wiring harness... shouldn't cost too much as there are lots in the boneyards....swap the engine, and then swap the wiring of the 95 to the 03+, then swap the SC parts onto the 2.2?
