So i put a new engine in my 98 2.2l sunfire and the temp gauge shows it is almost overheating (just below the H line) but we hooked up the scanner and it says 226*f and my dad says the temp gauge must be reading it wrong. Do you guys know if 226 it near overheating? Thanks
yes our cars only operate around 195 iirc

What do you think the problem is? The fan is coming on so its not that, thought it might be air in the coolant but it is still doing it.
Oh yeah, it started to run hot after we replaced the cat and sensor so i dont understand why it is doing this because the old cat was dead it had almost nothing in it.
does the temp drop down if you start driving? the fan usually doesnt come on till about one notch before the "H", and even then it doesnt drop down very far.

the fan definitely isnt going to be keeping it from overheating.
either bad head gasket or thermostat.

Uhm.... don't you mean the fan should be keeping it from overheating? My fan keeps the 3400 from overheating

Being the 2.2 I would guess on the headgasket like Paul said. That or the thermostat. If you put a motor in from the junk yard, you really should change little stuff like water pump, thermostat maybe a few gaskets here and there and hell maybe even the front and rear main seals while you've got the motor out. Head gasket is something I normally wouldn't go for though, so if that's the case.
Though, on the 2200 I've been around them before that get a good sized air bubble in there and they're a MOFO to get out of some of them. My buddy had a 98 2200 sunfire that was doing the overheating thing after having a shop change the head gasket for him. I spent a good hour working air out of it. Sometimes it helps to jack up the passenger front of the car to bleed the coolant out.

Fan is not suppose ot come on until 223 degree's so 226 is not overheating.

I got a mechanic to do a test for the head gasket and it passed so it aint that, so i guess i will have to check that out. So john 226 degrees isnt over or near overheating because my temp gauge is saying it is near the H line, i will take a pic to show you guys.

With the engine cool, bleed the air out of the bleeder screw on top of the water neck on the drivers side of the block and on the heater cross over tube in the front. Keep the coolant reservoir filled. drive the car, let it cool and repeat till it runs at the normal temperature. This can take a few cycles before it's done.
That's usually what it is. Try this first.
Like I said GM has our cars set to turn the cooling fan on at 223 degree's. SO 226 is not what they would consider overheating. I'm not saying it is not hot. Is your cooling fan turning on?

what is it with everyone and "air pockets? ive emptied and refilled coolant systems 100 times over and NEVER got air trapped in the system...had problems alot with nissans but never a cavalier.
Well i drove aboot (im canadian) 100km's to and it stayed just below half so i dont know what is going on with this car but i am still going to check the thermostat.
Can you answer if the cooling fan is coming on when the temp gets that high?
Scott-I have never had a problem either on any J motor.

Just remembered that i replaced the thermostat when the engine was out.
And yes the fan cycles on and off john

Nope.... fan goes on at approximately 195deg the very start of the red zone

There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.

I 100% agree with madjack, this is most likely your problem..you have a big air void in your block causing vapor lock...it's a pain to bleed the air out properly from the cooling system, went through this a few times on my '96 sunfire...only I would add to what he said, I found it useful to remove cap and start car and rev the engine... put something under the coolant reservoi to catch overflow and you will see air bubbling up...try and rev the engine and run it for a while until the bubbles stop...add some cololant if it's really low, put cap back on and let it cool, top up and repeat.

My car is running 226 and it isnt in the red zone
And what does this have to do with performance, btw? lol

Really interesting. Every Jbody file I have seen (that is stock) has the fans on at 223 degree's. 195 is normal running temp.

Yeah 195 isnt the start of the red zone and what catagory should this be in FFTT?
