I noticed that my car has started to grind when I shift from 2nd to 3rd. Probably started about 2 months ago. It only does this at high rpms. About 4500 and above. Sometimes I can avoid the grind by pushing the shifter closer to where 5th gear is when upshifting. It also grinds when downshifting from 4th to 3rd. Again it only does this at higher rpms. I can usually avoid the grind by driving normal and shifting at lower rpms, but it sucks when I need to step on it, or quickly slow down. I'm assuming it's the 3rd gear synchro? But I don't know for sure. If it is, should I use the GM Synchromesh fluid to try and help it? I also heard of one guy replcing his stock shifter with a short shift kit and that got rid of the grind. I don't know how that happened though. lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 99 z24. Thanks
Mine used to do the same as yours. It'll very slowly get worse. I just put in a used 60k tranny for $300 CAN.
yup. its the snycro. definitely. isusu's are known for it 100%..... 3rd is usually the first to go.
be careful, the last time i just said screw it and drove mine i ended up messing it up big time and it got stuck in 4th gear because of it. wouldnt budge.

honestly ive never had one rebuilt. ive only had two bad ones combined to make one good one.

well it did for like 6 months 5 years ago LOL i havent used it since but yea it worked out flawlessly actually.
at the time i had them install my phantom grip LSD as well so im sure that was a little extra but two combined the two bad trans' and make one good one with that was like $170 iirc.

I had the problem in mine, and I just double clutched third for a year or so. It's how you shift an unsynchronized transmission such as in old tractors, etc...
I finally got an amazing deal on a full tranny with only 30k so I just bought that and swapped it in over a weekend

Where did you find that tranny? Do you know of any place I can find one with low miles? I'm willing to pay a little bit for one.
The dealership found it for me, it was like they had it waiting. No problems with the used tranny and i've put on about 15000km since install. I did the clutch at the same time since it'll save a bit of cash down the line. and had a few little pet peeves with the spec stage 2, so if you're thinking about a clutch aswell i'd say try a different brand.
I'm prolly not gonna replace the clutch since I just did that about 3000 miles ago when we replaced the motor. When we did the motor we replaced everything except the transmission and now here we are 3 months later and now we gotta do that too. haha
