Alright so as some of you know i bought a cav that was for sale in the ohio regional fourms. It was in need of a new motor so i decided it would be a fun little project. While i may have found a motor but i had a couple questions about it before i made the purchase. The motor is out of a 07 cobalt but it is just a regular 2.2. eco so i was first wondering if i could use this motor in the car. It will be put in an 02 ecotec if that helps. I was hoping that i coud just swap the fuel rail and intake manifold and be ok. Then i found out that this new motor need a new head gasket. Im getting it off a mechanic from a dealership and i guess a lady came in because her car was overheating and they said that the head gasket was bad but due to it being under warrenty they replaced the whole thing, the motor only has 30,000 miles on it and it was an older lady that had the car im just worried something else might be wrong with the motor. So i figured i would tell you guys what i was told about the motor and see if you guys think that it sounds like a legit deal and a head gasket would get me fixed up. Thanks.
i would replace everything, gaskets, seals you name it since is a used motor. Send the head to get checked and do pretty much a rebuild with out taking the pistons out. thats what i would do.
I could be wrong here, since I've never looked at the Cobalts... but I'm pretty certain they use a different crank reluctor wheel.... instead of the 7x or whatever the Cavalier uses, it's a different one. So you'd have to strip the engine down just to replace that ring. And don't the Cobalts use a returnless fuel system? You'd have to swap a bunch of stuff from the 02 blown engine onto the 07...
Considering how many 03-05 Cavaliers and Sunfires can be easily found in wrecking yards... I think you'd be better off getting an engine you know is going to work without having to mod stuff....
I picked up a whole car for $800...
cobalts use the 58x, also a returnless fuel system, different Throttle body also, 07s were the first year for the coil on plug on the L61 also, most of that you can strip off the old motor, I don't see it being an issue.
In fact the 07s also have different cams and bigger exhaust porting, I believe its a bit stronger too, its a good engine to put in a J if it can be made to work as far as the reluctor wheel
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
the crank trigger (reluctor wheel) isn't right, it won't work.
you need a 2.2 eco from 02-05
