Looking for some suggestions on what I should do for a 2.4 build, just something for a fun dd but possibly add turbo later. I've already got the HO manifold and bigger tb so what else does everyone suggest while I've got the engine out and spare time?
without a doubt port and polish the head. 2.3 oil pump swap would be a smart move too. the secret cams are a little over rated in my opinion. they give you more top end power but take away from the bottom end. people who do the swap on mild builds have found their tracktimes unchanged. you could do ho cams but then youd need to either get the hex end indtalled in the cams and have the lftter bores bored out for 2.3 lifters or use 2.3 cam towers and powersteering and you would need to tune or you will run lean in rpms above 4000. a header and full exhaust is an important thing too, if your going turbo later then 2.5 inch is a good minimum. solid mounts are also smart with any build. forged internals not only make the engine stronger but the rotating assembly lighter therefore freeing up power, also get the rotating assembly ballanced.
Any idea of cost factor with all this? I can get 2.3 parts free @ the yard i go to as everything is free for me, just have to find something w/ a 2.3 first. Im considering turboing it later on but wanna run N/A for awhile first. Thanks for the suggestion, I really wasnt sure where to start other than forged internals and cams but yes this is just gonna be a mild build so maybe wont change out cams but open to all opinions as I just have free time and an engine ready to be torn down.
ive always wanted to use the 87-88 quad4 cams since they are high duration low lift. id imagine they would work nicely with a 2.4 since its torquey and they are suited for midrange power.
the oil pump swap is not cheap. if you search on here you can find the thread that has it step by step. the pan needs to be modified, you need the 2.3 parts, and the block needs to be drilled for the swap. thats probably pretty expensive to have done. although i saw in the classifieds all the parts, an already modified block and oilpan in the classifieds a day or 2 ago i think it was all for like 250. could save money with somthing like that.
the ported head can cost a lot or a little depending where you go. some places will do it for about 200 dollars but it is usually just a port match. the machine shop i went to charged me 800 but i got a vlave job and it resurfaced too. or if you have a dremel you could do it yourself to keep the cost down.
forged internals could be expensive, prbably about 800 for pistons and rods unless you can find them in the classifieds.
dont forget machine shop costs also, they all depend on what your engine will need.
Yea i know all the stuff would cost alot ... but I have enough hook ups with people that own machine shops, junk yards, etc... that it wouldnt be too bad. I think for now im putting the secret cams, ho manifold, and tb. I've got a couple spare 2.4s around so gonna build one up a little at a time, probably do the 2.3 oil pump swap on that but this one is just getting a melling or jbp for now. I really wouldnt consider building a 2.4 but its got a built tranny (lsd, 373 gears, new clutch, posi front) so why not? lol
