Ecotec intake manifold options....
Friday, September 18, 2009 8:38 PM
I have an 02 caVY with an ecotec and trying to see who out there has done any intake manifold experimenting! As far as i know, for n/a applications, my options are the 2.4l vvt ecotec manifold kit for 2.2 cobalts or summit racing lists a gm performance manifold for the ecotec p/n :88958633. Now for my important questions, other than wanting anyones opinions on manifold flow and performance, first does the 2.4 manifold fit on a cavy??? not talking bolt pattern cuz i know thats the same, i mean hood clearance and clearance against components and radiator/support??? second if anyone has ran the gmp manifold, can u use the stock throttle body or only the reccomended LS1 throttle body??? Any comments appreciated!!!

PJ has and the only one that provides N/A gains is the LE5 manifold. I never heard of a LS1 TB for the LE5 intake mani., but a bored stocker will do fine.

So the LE5 mainfold will fit a cavy, no clearance issues? and if u look up that p/n on summit it will bring up the gm perf manifold and the side note is designed for ls1 throttle body and im not sure if the bolt patterns are the same?? check out the gm perf one, it seems like by design it would flow better! slightly resembles the hahn mainifold for ss/sc cobalt with turbo swap kit. What do you think??

The long style intake manis help turbocharged performance and hurt N/A.

Yes the LE5 fits without a problems, but it requires the comp to be retuned.

We can supply a bolt-in model for a fraction of that GM part, and with a J-body TB flange to boot. Designed to fit the J engine bay. All the homework already done!

ok so ill prob do that then and go with the le5 manifold. I thought all ur hahn manifolds are turbo app only??? You make n/a manifolds??? how much??? and do u have any links to see them???

Indeed we do! As of late, folks have been using them on n/a apps too.

This one has the PortFueler option (thus the injectors and fuel rail), but that's not a requirement. This is also a Cobalt version, but our J-body item is nigh identical.

We're considering a Group Buy on them, so pricing is not "carved in stone" at this time.

I had the 2.4 Eco manifold on my Sunfire at the bash last year. (2008) and my car is turbo'd. I can tell ya it helped out my torque tremendously. So far I'm the only one to use it on a turbo application as far as I know.

Do you have any dyno sheets showing gains? It's a great looking piece, but I'd like to know what it puts down.

I've had the LE5 mani for about a year. Definately need larger injectors and a tune because you will max the stock injectors on the top end. 30lb/hr or 310cc/min ford red tops are sufficient for n/a apps. Rev to 7k with other supporting mods to take advantage of it...

You know, I don't yet. I ask customers to provide them, but it's one thing to ask, lol...another to actually get. There's only a handful out there so far on N/A cars.

We'll keep trying, and get you folks something to look at as soon as available. If any Chicago-region folks want to try an install here at our place with dyno before and after, we can work something out. Ideally, it would be a car with other airflow mods like cams so as the show the manifold's true ability...although I'd be interested even in a stock engine if enough other mods were in place (header, exhaust, TB, HPT, the usual).

I have the LE5 as well, makes a good difference in the upper RPM.

One fitment issue tho, I also have the AEM intake and with the manifold the plastic tube that comes off the TB now hits the rad support. Its actually had to be wedged in there.

Not a problem if you have stiff motor motors, but it might cause problems for those guys that don't due to the motor rocking and possibly breaking the plastic pipe.

You guys should really consider a couple of these for the LD9, just the flange would be different Id assume.

Ah very nice Hahn products. We have also sold a few of these intakes to N/A ecotecs, customers seem to really enjoy them.

Heh, it's kind of been mothballed for a few years...Darrin's been busy with family life. He did manage to pop some nice hi 11's with it before putting it away, which is fun stuff for a stock LD9. The car is nice and light, and all homebuilt...Darrin's pretty handy!

The pics show our first generation manifold, with the round log design. Our current plenum-box design is a major step forward in terms of power, flow, and overall quality. A very evolved design, it actually is based on my championship Pro Mod and Funnybike work with six-second turbocharged motorcycles. This design first bowed in our Automotive division in our amazing '98 Neon street car that went mid 10's @ 140 back in 2001 and cemented its fame in Hot Rod Magazine as one of their Ten Most Significant features that year. A FWD Neon in Hot Rod that many years ago was quite a feat. We were very proud of that little car!

Got a stock head or intake manny laying about you could send us? When we did Darrin's, we took a shortcut and cut the flange off his Venom manny, so I've not designed a CNC billet flange for LD9 just yet. PM me if you like to discuss further.

OK! let's get this thread (and I am as guilty of pirating it as anyone!) back to L61.

u can run the short runner manifolds on all motor cars, but u better have lots of supporting mods, compression, long tube header, cams, and most importantly a ecu that allows u to rev it pretty damn high cause thats where ur gains with a short runner intake are going to accur. im talking upwards of 7500 rpms. the higher u go the more power u will make. a guy just did a shoot out on 7 different manifolds for a sohc neon......... the only 2 that beat mine in terms of peak power were 2 sets of itbs. u will lose power under the curve going with a short runner manifold but when u get to the mid to higher rpms u will surpass a long runner manifolds pk power by quite a bit. my intake that was tested in it was a 2 year old short runner version made from a stock sohc neon manifold core, hense the black paint on it. it looses power under the curve compared to the rest of the manis but it comes on strong up top and just keeps going, it even surpasses the long runner set of itbs in one of the last tests he does. on all motor applications i taper the plenum to help funnel air into the last 2 runners rather than just doing a big open plenum like my boosted ones. on my all motor apps i have seen gains all the way up to 23whp just by switching intake manifld and going to a 8mm larger t-body. not the same motor i know but the same principles apply, heres the intake shoot out i spoke of.......... take a look if u want to see what does what......... but i warn it is a long post.

I just dont understand why people continue to cry about low end loss.... does anyone start racing from 1000rpm-3000rpm? i sure as hell dont.... you want to make the power where the power is needed and where it can be used.... correct me if i am wrong... but how many people lower their rev limiter? who puts in smaller cams? weaker valve springs? you are always trying to INCREASE the rev... not decrease... if you want to whine and cry about low end loss then maybe modifying your car to hang with the big boys is NOT for you...

The stock valvetrain can handle 7250rpm all day(ecotec)... but the stock intake manifold cannot flow enough air at those rpm to make power... if you rev it up... it HAS to flow... So, put a real intake manifold on it... whether it be HRC or AMMfab...
