Icemike's build progress thread

Soo Ive been boosted for about 2 years now, from the m45 setup with nitrous to being turbo for about a year now, all on my stock daily driven motor with over 100k miles now. With that being said, it was time to start gathering parts for a motor build. It was either this, or do an eco swap which I cant believe I actualy contemplated on; dont get me wrong its a good motor just not my preference. Soo a few months ago I started planning and buying parts here and there. Kinda slowed down lately as Ive been buying some other things to make the car more driver friendly and comfortable. On to the pics, and Ill updating often with lots of ld9 lov'in

Wiseco 9:1 .040 over pistons, gotta thank Karo for the hell of a deal on these!

Cometic .074 hg

HO cams, gotta thank Zyaaaaa for encouraging me to go with these over my original plan of using secret cams

HO exhaust cam tower with new feed fitting

2.3 35mm lifters

2.3 springs and retainers

ARP headstuds

96-99 ported head I got off Paul Tjiepkes a while ago. Spent a good bit of time polishing the exhaust ports up but then decided to open them up a bit more which is what Im working on now

Polished HO manifold with pcv nipple in head port, along with my blox polished vacuum manifold

RC 650cc injectors, should be enough fuel...for a while

Along with my modded walbro 255 pump

Thats it for now. Should have a nice package coming from Zyaaaaa soon as well as some other things that I still need to pick up, other than that things should slowly be rolling in and coming together. Plans are to have the motor together over the winter and ready to drop in early spring..that is if my stock ld9 holds together that long hah.

a 60MM Tb off the technic would work nicely with all this

8 psi with m62 and IAT under 100

You have a lot of the same parts I'm planning on intalling this winter. Did/are you getting the hex to run the 2.4 p/s pump and are you planning to mod the intake cam with the cam position sensor pickup? Is that just a stock HO manifold that has been polished? I was debating on running a log style manifold but not sure what I should do yet. I was actually on the RC site earlier today and was trying to figure out what size injectors I was gonna get and it was telling me with a 80% duty cycle I would need 689cc's for 350bhp. I think I may just go with a 750cc to be safe. Anyways, help your build goes well.

yea mathew. ive got a ton of his parts yet LOL

ive got all his 2.3 oil pump swap stuff, including a brand new crank drive gear. all ready to send just waiting on finishing up the cam tower.

mike- i dropped the tower off last week, my machinist is working on clearancing the lifter bores for the HO cam lobes. once thats done ill finally be sending you a nice big care package.

other parts look awesome. cant wait to see what else is in store.

when you're done with the head have it media blasted and cooked. it will look brand f'ing new afterwards.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!

Good luck with the build Mike. I still have that block, just not enough time to get it there

Cody- Ill pm you

Mathew- Yes I plan press the hex in for ps. The cps I may have weldedin in, but I think for the money Id spend to have that done and lathed down Id rather just use hpt. I plan to get hpt unless I can find someone close who can regularly tune when I need to. It is a stock ho mani that was polished and a fitting tapped in the flange for the pcv, then a hole is drilled in my phenolic spacer that goes to the port in the head. There are a few people running around 400whp with only 650-750cc injectors. Like Jr Marks I believe is using 750cc injectors and dynoed around 437whp I think it was.

David- Thanks, got the pics too. Ill pm you in a min

Brad- Good to hear man. I may need to talk to you about some more things you may be able to help me with, if so you may have that package a bit longer lol. And yea I plan to have the head blasted.

Jason- I still want it for sure. Working 2 jobs dont have alot of free time, but we'll figure something out soon.

Thanks everyone. Cant wait to get this done and turn up the boost!

Yep 750s in my brothers car. Its all about the fuel pump and lines. The braided ss lines dropped the afr by 1.0-1.5. But they have to go from the fuel filter all the way to the rail! Ask fetter

Dont worry about the cam sync. Not needed...

Are you running a booster pump as well?

I plan to aim for around 300-320whp starting out with around 15psi. Compression will be prett low with 9:1 pistons and thicker hg, but using the older ld9 head will bump it up a little.

Re: Icemike's build progress thread

Nope just the racetronixs. Before fetter put in the ss lines and booster pump his VE offset was 75 or around there, and that was at around 440 hp i believe, or maybe it was higher for that offset, i dont remember. Now ours with just the racetronixs and ss lines was 35. So that fact alone shows how much the ss lines will help.

mike you're compression will also go up using SS valves and the fact that its .040 over will as well...

but nothing to worry about.

*ps, what is VE offset?

VE offset: This value adds to the VE table values such that values greater than 100% can be acheived.

Thats off the HPT software.

lmao better question... what is VE?

volumetric efficiency?

Got another tial 38mm wg which is what I originally had when I first turbo'd. Traded my buddy my turbonetics evolution for it, mainly just wanted it for the more spring options and he needed a wg a hair shorter. The turbonetics had a 9lb spring with a 1lb shim, this has a 10lb spring soo still 10psi

And just a few things going on the car this weekend-tein basics and russell braided brake lines. Daily driven turbo cars need to stop and handle better as well lol.

Since out cars move the strut when we turn, and there is a bearing in there from the factory.. does the tein have a bearing on the front struts?

Who'd you pick the basics from?

nice mike.. looking forward to the upgrades

Got the Basics from Theo Gibson on here.

I must say, the ride is much firmer and less bouncy than the dspec/road magnet combo I had. Also an even stance unlike the raked stance the road magnets have. The fronts are set about 2" lower and the rears about 2.2" lower. Im also very happy that my 3" exhaust isnt hitting the rear axle

Re: Icemike's build progress thread

what exhaust do you have? cti?

and LOL i bought a whole sleuth of of stuff off theo. i think pretty much the only stuff i did not get were the basics and his built engine

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
Re: Icemike's build progress thread

Yep, I have 3" cti piping with a 3" dynomax superturbo. Kinda wish Ida kept my megan muffler as it was very deep, but the dynomax is nice and quiet. If I get any cannon muffler it will be a greddy ti, and just throw on the 30" glasspack I have to quiet it down.

Brad did you get that top mount turbo mani from him? Thought about snagging that hah, he gave me a great deal on the basics.

Got another small update of some things for the car, kinda slow because of the holidays and all. My main focus next is to pick up the block Im getting so I can get it to the shop.

TTR lower mount

New cps sensor, new poly sway bar bushings and endlink kit for my eibach rear sway bar Ive had sitting around

Turbo drain fittings and hks bov flange, have 3" piping coming to redo my cold side charge piping.

Spare timing housing, gona be pc'd with some other things. Also pulled out the pcv nipple and gona try to tap it for an fittings to run braided catch can lines.

Ive wanted to pick up one of these as my roads are pretty bumpy around me and battery likes to move around in the box a bit in the box its in, so got this billet optima holder

Thanks for looking! Progress should pick up soon now that the holiday season is over.

nice holder! can't wait to see this when its done!

very nice, that battery holder is just great haha. this looks like it's going to be a mean machine.
when are you planning on getting it all together and installed?

Re: Icemike's build progress thread
Saturday, December 26, 2009 1:22 PM
Thanks guys! Because the car is daily driven, some things Ive posted like the tein's and other suspension stuff, and the battery holder and what not are installed or will be soon. Im driving the car every day so it should be more enjoyable than just sitting in a garage hah.

The engine build and turbo upgrade stuff will be installed all at once Im hoping by late spring. Im working on supporting mods here and there as well to make this an all around better build for when the car gets more power.

Heres what Im working on for the next couple months:
-Redo my cold side charge piping in 3"
-msd dis-2, msd 8224 coils and interface moules to rewire and ditch the 2200 stuff
-Alot of 8an braided hose for fuel feed line, catch can, and main vacuum manifold hose
-8an fitting for walbro inline pump, and other needed fittings
-Get spare control arms and poly bushings
-Get rear sway bar mocked and make custom L brackets for the ends

This may change if Atomic gets some ld9 turbo manifolds made by then
