I would like to get my 1995 2.2 engine rebuilt or buy a rebuilt long block. I want to have it built with performance parts on the valve train and have the rotating assembly balanced. I also want the oil system boosted. I know this is not the best car for it but I drive allot on the highway at speeds around 95 MPH for long distances with short peaks around 105 MPH. The stock engine has lasted well but seems like its vibrations at high rev could be improved. I have 140K miles on it and it is still going strong but the valves are getting louder. I know this car will never be like my Camaro but once I am up to speed in this little commuter I would like the engine to sound and perform better. Also I need to upgrade to a full performance Sway bar kit; anyone got a lead on a great deal? Anyone know of someone who can build my motor in So Cal?
High volume oil pump, SBC rockers, 60* V6 studs/or the proper studs for the rocker style you pick, There are plenty of threads on this. 2200 (98+) Pistons, Could include 97, But I'm not positive. Eagle Rods, Etc....
Valvetrain noise is almost un-avoidable with these motors. Although, 9 times out of 10, It will never be a problem. Just annoying. On my 5th OHV and this is the first one without it
.
Progress, Addco, And Eibach are the main companies that offer a sway bar kit for our platform. Not sure of any others.
My Cavi has the single cam and it’s a 1995. I don’t mean to be ignorant but I am a Chevy V8 guy so I am not up on compatibility with these engines and parts from different years. I have had this car for 9 years and thought I would build it up a bit for more performance on my way to work every day. You listed some valve parts and some later year pistons. Anything I should look out for I.E. problems with compatibility?
I know it only has one cam. It also has pushrods just like a V8. Very simple motors, Cam profiles are similar to a SBC. If you know V8's then this thing is a walk in the park.
There are threads about the sbc rockers, what studs to use, and the 2200 pistons. Amongst other various things.
Here is one that covers the rockers and studs.

only 98+.
and what's the point of going 95+mph on any freeway? I wouldn't trust any car, especially a J going that fast.

Are you one of those hall monitor types that goes the speed limit in the fast lane . 95 is not that fast. In my Camaro I push well over 100MPH all the time. I know my stock Z28 will go 155 MPH reliably. Chevy can sure make a good engine. I have been driving this way for almost 20 Years and by the way the J body has never let me down. When it does, I will see you in hell.
hell no, if and when I'm on the highway, I'm going about 75MPH (120KPH as what I'm used to) but 100MPH is just ridiculous. I've done it before, in all 4 of my J's over time, and not ONE of them felt safe at that speed. and the first 2 were some of the better handling J's on the market stock. my most recent one has a good chunk of suspension mods done, and it STILL doesn't feel good.
with yours being a 95, I'm guaranteeing it has the 3-speed automagic considering you having said "vibrations at high revs". I hope the tranny locks up on you while you're going the 105MPH and you get severely injured so you can never drive your Z28 again. we don't need douchebags on the road like you.
you're prolly one of those people who say "speed doesn't kill, it's the people going slow that kill". News flash, those people going "slow", are driving safely. if you want to go fast, GET THE F
UCK OFF THE ROAD.
My 95 Cavi is a 5 speed.. Vibration comes from the slight unbalance that is part of the 2.2 push rod engine ( notice above I want to have the engine balanced during the future re-build). You admit you have been above 100MPH in all of your J-bodies. See, even a douche like you loves the speed; You just don't have the balls to keep it up. You must be from a socialist country (Canada) evident by your need to originally comment on my driving rather than my performance question ( hall monitor ). I agree with you speed does kill but then again, so does living. 110% for 100% of the time.
P.S. maybe your J-body needs a good alignment.

You are a @!#$ idiot... /thread
I guess it does sound like I drive fast but I got to tell Yeah..... On the Freeway where I live, everyone drives at least 85MPH plus. Every now and then you can see a speed limit lover driving with the slower big riggs (most of the big trucks travel over 85 as well). Hell, one day I was going just under 95MPH and an older lady in an old but well cared for AMC pacer past me. Suit yourselves but no traffic and long stretches of 4 lanes in both directions surrounded by open rolling hills. Don't be to Jealous.
Theres really no need to be driving 95 mph all the time on any highway. We dont have Autobahn here. I could see if you were driving in certain areas in Texas because they have stretches of highways with a speed limit of 80 mph.

The LN2 shares much in terms of design with the more poplar Chevy engines. The head is designed after the BBC, the lower valvetrain after the SBC, and the cam-timing set & short-block takes after the ol' "stovebolt" I-6. If you know what to do with those, you know what to do with this engine. Just keep in mind that the intake & exhaust valves are very close in size to each other, so unless you change the intake to a larger one... keep the cam a straight profile.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".

HAHAHAH, I'm going to break this whole thing down for you.

one plus for you.

umm, no, the vibration is your wheels not being balanced OR designed for those higher speeds. As well as the wheel bearings. NOTHING on the J platform is meant for high speeds. it's a @!#$ commuter car.

at one part, you are correct, only, I've HIT the 100MPH mark, never have I felt the need to exceed that. the second part, is incorrect, I DO have the balls to, and I know, that my car can now safely hit that mark if I felt the need to, as I have, and still am in the process of, beefing up my suspension components to be able to handle higher speeds, as well as have to make quick turns around anyone, if I feel the need to go that fast again, to avoid certain death. though, I find no use to go that fast, PLUS, I'm simply using my brain and keeping it slower to CONSERVE GAS, which, you are destroying the image of americans (no offence to any other of my american friends on here, the majority of you are more capable of using your heads than the masses) of using unnecessary gas consumption.

at least you can make me laugh. Otherwise, you're not good for much else.
if ANYONE on here is the "hall monitor" as you said, it would have to be the american government. granted, they are not on here per say, they seem to be the ones always trying to get in and tell everyone what to do. since when has Canada done that? please, educate yourself by opening a book once in a while.

really? I didn't know that.

what? the hell does that have to do with anything?
short peaks at 105? Are you kidding me? Go 3 more mph and your at cut off. Thats ridiculous and your pushing your car really hard every day, that many rpms constantly is not healthy.
And vibrations may be from the suspension, these cars have some of the worst suspension.
I am that ninja that goes the speed limit in the "fast" lane.
I can't type in cursive!
when my cav was stock i had a bunch of meatheads in a v6 mustang checking out my girl and they tried running me off the road and i went the top speed of 108 in and out of traffic with no problem.
105? I clocked 117 before I found myself pushing the throttle to the point it was downshifting in a '85 Iron-Duke'd S-truck 'cross upper Indiana. So... BIG DEAL!
A V-6 Mustang... Shut one full of douche's down off the light years ago in a all-stock base-model 4-spd Chevette... Again, BIG DEAL!
And when I first got my license, I had pushed that same Chevette to the max on the highway... much like you're doing with your Cav, only I had a busted speedo-cable driving-gear & had no clue as to how fast I was going. Except for the look of shock on the face of drivers whom thought they were alone on the highway cruisin' at some in-excess-of-posted speed when I blew by them. Foolish in retrospect, so... BIG DEAL!
Save driving fast for the machines meant for it, and concentrate on just making you econobox more fuel-efficient, I say.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
i don't feel safe taking my j past 90 on the highway...sure i've taken it all the way to the limit..but i was dumb and won't do it again.
if you need to go 100 for long periods of time, why don't you spend the money to buy a car that you can do that safetly.
Rememeber kids... spell check is your friend
I feel very comfortable in my 96 5 speed all the way to the limiter. I would feel safe all the way to 120 if it would do it, and maybe someday it will, but the h rated tires will be long gone. Its very smooth all the way to 108, and this is the same car i gave $500 for 5 years ago, but i take very good care of it. I bought it to fix and sell but it grew on me and its a little sad to see it almost to the 200k mark. I was a gm tech for 6 years and didnt think much about the cavalier before i had one, afterwards i will most likely always have one because its so cheap to maintain. Ive drivin this car very hard and cant belive there isnt a piston sticking through the hood yet, but the motor shows no signs of letting loose. Btw if this is indead the old style 2.2 (no cam sensor) i know where 2 brand new ones are and i can get you a killer deal one one. Im close to buying one just for the new head. Hit me up scratch64075@yahoo.com
There was one time I flipped off a big rig for almost running me off the road and killing me. He subsequently tried to chase me down. Thing must have been empty because he was comin quick. I maxed out at 105 before on a closed track and it cut off the fuel on me, as it should. But this time, it never cut off and I got it all the way to 115 and probably more. It's like the car knew I was in deep @#$!, haha. Never did anything with the computer and I had no codes or anything like that. Weird...
