hey guys,,,i have a 2002 cavalier, ecotec, 5 speed,,,,,,,,,i need some advice for exhaust,,,,,,,,,it has a manifold, stock cat, eliminated resonator, and a late 90's flow-master,,,,,,,,,i was wondering if it would be good to invest in a glass-pack, or an actual resonator, also what kinds of brands i can get,,,,,,,,i have this annoying pooping when im deaccelerating,,,,,,i want to eliminate that,,,,,,,just wondering what i could get to stop that,,,,,,,,,also, i have plan to try out a thrush welded muffler instead of that horrible flow-master,,,,,i like loud but throaty,,,,and i wont put a coffee can on it,,,,,,,,,,any advise would be greatly appreciated thanks for the time guys
bump i really need help,,,,,,,

My wife's 2003 Ecotec 2.2 liter Sunfire:
* 2 1/4 inch in and dual 2 inch out muffler Trans Am muffler
* 2 1/4 piping to a very long 2 1/4 inch resonator
* 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter
* an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition
* 8 gauge ground wire kit
* Toyz front strut brace
* Russell stainless steel brake lines all around.
That popping sound is from the gas in the exhaust system lighting off, it happens to everyone running a stock fuel/air ratio and modding the stock muffler I've tried alot of thing to get rid of it and found out that its just the way things go if you are rocking an auto like me then shift it into D and the engine up shifts getting rid of the popping, (I like to bang the gears!) for a 5 speed do the same up shift if driving at speeds if slowing to a stop (like stop lights) then shift into N.
Unitll then the best I can suggest is to install a tip that dumps down towards the ground or that has a 90 degree bend at the exit like a "J". It helps a little. But what makes it worse is if to have a large muffler/tip at the end of your system, it echoes!!! And no glass pack will get rid of it so don't waste the cash on one you would be better of getting a high flow cat or diffrent muffler on your system.
One tip for a better deep tone is to place the muffler at the END of the system instead of inline of the system
I'm running a Cherry Bomb Estream muffler and trust me they sound mean at mid-high revs, and the idle sounds like its cam-ed.
If I can get my hands on something like records it I'll post and send the link.

The popping on decel on most cars tends to be from an exhaust leak, a very small one, towards the front of the exhaust. Typically the tiny bit of fresh air that enters combines with the very hot unburnt fuel in the exhaust and pop it ignites. I just got my cavalier and it makes me smile that all the stuff I learned on the saturn still applies, at least exhaust wise. A question to the OP, does your exhaust sound buzzy and raspy? Cause then a longer glass pack would deepen the tone and get rid of the buzz, the longer the glass pack the deeper the tone.

I'm pretty sure the exhaust pop has something to do with our engine's and fuel-cut off. I've had the sound with my old stock exhaust and ever since i installed a full new magnaflow exhaust system.
I have found ways around having it happen and still be able to downshift from 5th to 2nd without any pops. You just gotta play around a bit with how you clutch out. I find i have to downshift quick n firm from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd, and have a decent 3krpm(before downshift) or so for it to pull off nice and smoothly evertime.
The popping is most likly from a leak in the exhaust pipe, when deacelerating the exhaust creates a vacum affect. With a leak in the system, air coming in from the leak breaks up the exhaust tone, making it pop. Check out your exhaust pipe and al seams for leaks. If you find them i pretty sure when they are fixed it will stop making that annoying POP.
I have a ThrusH glasspack on my 99 Twin Cam and I love the way it sounds. The trick is to mount it as close to the end (if not at the end) of your exhaust. The popping sound is just a part of nature. Just make your exhaust is leak free and the glasspack will give you the sound your looking for.
You think the pop is annoying? I doubt its when they say an "exhaust leak"
I love the sound, nothing like letting off the gas at a high RPM, and hearing POW! POW! POW!.
All I have done is cut my muffler off and welded a straight pipe to a 3" chrome tip. The ecotec is a VERY deep low motor.
^^^ I know that has to sound like @!#$. I can't believe someone actually said they
like that sound, wtf. It's not supposed to sound like that, just so you know.
To the OP: If you want to keep your current muffler, try to add the longest possible resonator in there you can. If you're looking for a new muffler, you definitely need to look into getting a Dynomax Super Turbo. It's cheap and one of the best sounding mufflers for our cars imo.

i agree with Borderlin3, i like the "pop" sound too, but i have muffler on my sunfire
I cut my exhaust off about 5 inches after the cat...bad idea. it was SOOOOO loud haha, and so much POP. So i just cut the muffler off cause i couldnt get the rest of it out and just hooked up the rest of the piping, so mine stops right after my rear axle, sounds ok....still some pop, would like to put a muffler on it, thinking about running duals,
suggestions of good dual mufflers? i like the deep sound like flowmasters but those are expensive. thanks
The whole point in the design of the muffler (chamber-style, from the day they were intro'd) was to prevent the popping noise made during deceleration by air air getting "sucked" into the pipe, and henceforth arrest any flames or possibly sparks that could be produced in the exhaust, so brush-fires wouldn't accidentally be started. A glass-pack or straight-through design won't prevent this.
The beauty of the "turbo" muffler (So named because it's based upon the design GM made for the turbocharged Corvair... back in the early-sixties!) was that it can achieve what mufflers were originally designed to do, yet flow more freely so overall engine power production wouldn't be hampered.
I dig back-rap too, but loud get get to you after awhile. And I'm too old to go subjecting my hearing to more damage than I've already done.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
i actually like that sound too
forgot to add the reason mine makes it is because im just cut the exhaust off at the flex pipe trying to custom make an exhaust but it didnt work so i just have it open now. next week im putting the cat and res back on to quiet it down a bit but i know it will still pop because when i just took the muffler off it did it. sounds mean to me
the pop is more likely from the DFCO that our cars have... me and my friend (he owns a muffler shop) have looked it over extensively and theres no other reason for my popping lol
I have the same issue with the loud raspy sound at 4K RPM's since I've added a header and Rksport Dual Exhaust. I was looking at adding the Magnaflow 4'' round 2.25" -- "22 inch resonator (28'' total length) to the exhaust system in the Spring when the car is back on the road (I hope this resonator will fit!). I'm looking for a less raspy / quieter sound and was wondering if this would do the trick.
Also, if anyone has used this resonator on their exhaust system I would love to hear your opinion. I will link the Resonator at bottom. Thanks, Marty

i had that resonator on my car, went to a "standard" resonator with the little triangles on the inside of the pipe, and the latter was much better at getting rid of the "bees"
to the OP regarding popping, you can quiet that down by going with a quieter muffler. my car pops like that and i don't mind, where as my friend with the exact same exhaust setup and a different muffler is way quieter. i'm running 2.25" with a high flow cat and magnaflow race muffler..so its pretty damn loud.
14.82 @ 97 mph
Thanks, Jason. What's the brand you have for your resonator now? I have also read that many are satisfied with the 18" Vibrant resonator, but I guess it all depends on the exhaust setup.
I love my "popping noise"; sounds mean. Everyone looks because they hear it, thinking it's something cool. The look of disappointment on their faces when they realize it's a cavalier is priceless.
"In Oldskool we trust"
i hear ya there lol, people think the same when they see my sunfire
