Just wondering if a 2.4 out of a 2001 cavalier will direct swap to a 97 z24? 01 is an auto and 97 is a 5 spd will the 97 trans bolt right on the 01 engine?
youll need to use all of the manifolds etc for the 97 and you'll also need to address the fact the knock sensor is different. i cant remember if the 96-98 one is the larger one or not. but... you will either need a threaded insert with center threads or you will just need to drill the hole larger and thread it.

Damn I was hoping to drop it in and hook it right up. I'm guessing that you need to use the 97 manifold because the intake sensors are different? That shouldn't be a problem. Other than that and the knock sensor it will work though right? I will be buying a whole donor car...
you'll need to use the 97 exhaust so you can utilize the EGR system. or you could delete it completely... up to you.
and the intake is also a part of it but you can use a block off plate on the port in the back to cover that.

yes the 2001 motor will go in the 97 the motor is the same you'll just have to transfer all your sensors and manifolds from the old motor to the new one.

What would you guys suggest for power gains, and better handling that wouldn't break the bank? This is my first z24 so I don't know what they react well to. Intake, exhaust, chip, MAYBE cams??? Anti roll bars, lowering springs??? Any tips would be appreciated...
you could grab the ECM and wiring out of the 2001. you'll need the gauge cluster and BCM as well. that will delete your EGR, otherwise you'll need to delete it in the 97 computer as well..
as for the knock.. the larger knock was 96-99 and the smaller knock is 99-02, so you'll need to drill the knock out, unless you swap ECMs, then use the 01 knock.
Forgot to mention I also have a 2.3 h.o. was thinking about doing the cams and intake manifold swap........ Thoughts?
