This ^^^^^^
and from the other thread, ditch the auto and go with the 5 Speed F23 Getrag Transmission.
Oh and nothing toyota works out of the box on these cars. When toyota exported these cars to japan, as the toyota cavalier, they were still built in the Lordstown, OH GM Plant, they all were automatic, and they all had Quad 4 family "LD9" motors

The Isuzu (96-99) & Getrag (2000) 5-speed manual transmissions found in North America were not available on the Toyota Cavalier.

The Toyota Cavalier was just like a regular Cavalier... I think the OP was asking about some other kind of Toyota... maybe like a 2JZ-GE or something.
As far as engine swaps go... there are no 'easy' swaps unless the engine was already offered in a Cavalier or Sunfire from the factory. There are a few exceptions... both for and against. You can easily swap the Ecotec engine from a newer J-car into your 97.... physically, at least... but hooking it up is a pain unless you swap pretty much everything else in the car... On the other hand... there are custom mounts available in the GP forum here, to make swapping a 3400 engine into a J-car easier. You'll still need some fabrication skills and have to do a bunch of wiring.
If you want to stuff an engine in that isn't even a GM drivetrain.... you're into the all-custom swap. Mucho time and $$$ there. Pretty easy to suffice, you're going to end up taking everything from the donor car and somehow making it all fit in the J-body shell.
