Hello J-body community this may seem kinda old school but I was thinking about chaining down my engine so it has no play and so I have more torque. I was looking at racing motor mounts and my dad suggest chaining it down like he did back in the day with his old mopars. It's a 1995 2.2l cavy that I race on a 1/2 mile asphalt track and I need some more torque so I was wondering if this would be alright to do?
Thanks,

I seriously doubt it will help anything at all. You want to run faster times? Do a N/A build, Super/turbo it, or swap in a different engine.

It will do exactly what he plans if the chains are mounted right, Just an old school way of doing it. Most tracks or classes don't allow heavy modifications so most of these guys have to play with stock parts.
I say try it. May work, May not.. Never know. In theory it should.
solid mounts = win
chains? = fail

Thanks for the info guys. We can do modifications to our class but I do have a tight budget. Your right in theory it should work just as good as solid mounts If done correct. And Flaked Z-Fire how is it a fail you've never tryed it?

I say go for it, it worked way back when and don't know y not now. The motor in my t/a is chained, just make sure when u do it u put the chain where it pulls on the frame when u accellerate.

What's preventing you from sneaking a few welds in the factory mounts? I welded my lower mount solid and could do the same to the top. On the lower I cut a huge washer in half and welded it to the fame of the mount on one side and to the steel bushing on the other. Works great.

i just say fail cuz of the weight of the chains versus solid mounts. my grandpa chained down the engine in his old AMX
think i got pics somewhere i can scan and post.
pics were taken when i was like 4 or 5 lol im 31 now!

there is a guy in town here that has a 3rd gen f-body that he made some homemade steel brackets that bolt from various points
of the engine and trans and also solid eng and trans mounts. he said it was a lot of measuring and and a lot of work in general but worth every hour he spent on it and he said he spent less that 50 bux on materials. seen his car a car show here in town and i was talking to him about it.
just another idea i guess.
post some pics if ya chain her down!
i think it would be cool to see that especially on a ln2

If you have a welder just make your own solid mounts. For about $10 you could build them.
A lower mount no problem just get a piece of square tube and cut to length (might need a washer or 2) and install in existing place.
For the upper take a couple careful measurements and either bend or cut and weld a piece of 1/4 inch plate steel to mount. Then paint / powder coat them and done.
Ok well the plate steel may cost you a little more but for $20-25 you could have full solid mounts.
Another reason engines can be chained is if they are high horsepower and guys are worried about the heads. I know one guy around here who did that to his diesel 1 ton. That being said I highly doubt you'll build enough HP to do that. This diesel was putting down 1500+ HP and just as much torque.
Whats up people?

He said hes on a tight budget.

God I hate it when people say that..... Not really on a tight budget just dont want to spend money . Im in northern canada so that 50 100 bucks turns into 150-200 with shipping and brokage fees. You can still race on a tight budget just have to watch yourself on the track and in your local auto store

Hey I know what your getting at man I made somethign for my 2.2 in my 95 cirlce track car adn I noticed an improve, mtn !! Here's what I did ... I took a pc of flat stock and drilled holes so it would sit down on top of the upper motor mount the cam straight off that towards the upper core support and just hand to make a couple bends to drop it down so it was level with the core support about $5 worth of steel and about 1/2 hr to 45 min and I was done then just unbolted the upper motor mount and slid the steel over the bolts and then tightened the nuts back up and I welded it to the core support ... in hind sight I would have made a cut in the steel near the core support and spliced it with another pc of flat stock and a couple bolts so it was removalbe ... when I changed the motor this spring after I unbolted it I had to bend it up out of the way and ended up ripping the thin metal that the core suppoort is made from ... I will get a pictuer in a little bit for you and try to figure out how to post it on here for you !!
Its def worth doing tho ... I can tell you form experience
Hey Chip that would be Great! Some pics of that mount and your car would be awesome too. How big of a track are you running?
