i posted this question in Newts progress thread but i am going to post it here too just in case....
But anyway i have a couple questions for you guys that have done LE5 manifold swap... first of all how did you get a vaccum for your fuel pressure regulator? i am about to do my install this week sometime but i cannot figure out how to do this.... here is my idea of removing the plastic line for the evap and putting a rubber hose in its place and installing a tee fitting and using that... also i know its a dumb question but do you have a how to link by chance? i know its straight forward but i am confused about the plate and stuff that comes with the kit.
thanks guys in advance i really hope someone can help me out i want to install this thing this week....
Hey man.
The FDR vacuum line is a strange one. Some peoples car have it on the intake manifold and others (myself included) have it factory on the air box.
Not sure why GM would even bother sticking it on the air box since there is little to no vacuum there. From my understanding it is there to lower fuel pressure at idle.
I just drilled a little hole in my intake and stuffed the end of it in there...never had any issues.
As for the plate, you will need to drill a hole in it to allow air for the IAC passage to pass through.
Similar to this...
Other than that the installation is very straight forward.
Any other questions feel free to ask.
Yeah I knew about the plate but what about that 4th bolt? Did you put it like that one how to showed about grinding down that 4th bolt or what ever? I also am using a after market intake and also I will be boosting this car soon so I can't just stuff the vac line like you said. It will have to go on the intake somehow. Hmmmm.
For the bolts...
I have one that screws into just the plate, and the other 3 go through the plate and screw into the boss' on the intake manifold.
Never had a leak this way, you should be fine with this if your running low boost since it holds vacuum fine.
Not sure about that FPR line considering....try and ask some of the boosted guys to see what they are doing.
Awesome that's what I was going to do is the 3 bolts through the plate and throttle body and that one just in the plate. Thanks for all your help man. What do you think about my idea for the vac? Put a rubber line between the evap selonid and the nipple on the manifold and put a tee in that line? That's the only thing I could come up with other than doing like you said.
why not just use a tee fitting for the vacuum line?
its not rocket science man, just give it vacuum and you're golden.
as far as the tb adapter plate goes, I too have 3 bolts that secure to the actual manifold, and one that just attaches to the adapter. Never had a single problem with it like this.
when i had it on my car i cut a hole in the number 4 runner and used epoxy to install a nipple on the manifold for fpr vac source. and like pj said the 3 go into the mani and the 4th goes into the plate.
I used all four bolts into the manifold, plus the offset one for the throttle body. I just took a small bolt where the IAC blocks access and ground down the head until it was VERY thin and tightened it down. It works great though. As far as fuel pressure regulator line, I ran a vacuum fitting directly from one of my runners up to the regulator.

yeah I know it needs vac are you talking about what I just said? Put the tee on the line going to the evap selonid?

That's what i did. My FPR was one that was attached to the stock intake mani, so i wanted to keep it that way.

nice that's great news thx man. Mine stock was on the intake track itsself (02) but when I did my after market intake I just uncovered that extra nipple on the stock intake manifold. Never had a issue. Have you had any issues when the evap purges?
Awesome thanks a bunch everyone. I will attempt this tomorrow if the rain holds off.
make sure the bolt that you use is short enough that you have clearance for a proper seal. otherwise youre going to have to pull out a dremel and take some off the top to make it fit properly. at least thats the problem we ran into.... plus we just used random @!#$ that was laying around
Eat my shift
When i was running it i had the 4 bolts holding the throttlebody in and it never sealed i went to the strip with it and lost like .4 in the 1/4. so that pissed me off. went home from the strip and figured out how to get a 5th bolt in place.
Sense the LE5 manifold dosent have any previsions to hold the Oil dip stick or coolant like those bolts work perfect. Just requires a little dremel work with them on the bolt to make it flat on the head and to the back of the throttlebody for fitment. and with the dipstick i think i just zip-tied it some place to it would stay still. not that it ever moved.
and with the vaccume like for the FPR ACE hardware and some j-b weld were my friends with getting that to work.
(and yes my intake was like 6" long was kick ass.)
Nice thanks for the pics ss-j. I'm gonna try 4 bolts first if no luck I'll try 5. Great idea on using the dip stick bolt.
Its short and the same thread that its perfect for it. but some people have luck with just using 4 bolts i was not one of them.
but as you can see im no longer running the manifold it just felt weird to me its hard to explain. but it may have been because it was with an automatic rather then a manual.
Also everyone who has the actual create engine kit do you leave that insert in the throttle body opening in or do you take it out? Thx.
I left mine in, if you are referring to that little black piece.
Yeah I was I letlft it in. I finally got it installed it wasn't fun to wrestle in I know that lol. Next I gotta get that dang bung welded in and my aem installed along with my 36# injectors. But she runs and idles perfectly. Only thing is I wasn't aware my aem intake piece wouldn't fit so I had to make a temp intake out of my intake pieces and a flex part from my wifes escort zx2. I think I'm going to modify my aem piece with bondo bumper repair kit idk yet I will figure something out. It hit the brake booster part :-(. But on to the pics remember this is temp lol so don't laugh to hard.
here is a pic of my revco 60mm tb on it and yes I used 4 bolts and it killed the car when I put my hand over the throttle body opening lol. That hurts btw lol.
here's my tee I came up with. I put it on my evap selonid line I replaced the plastic with rubber.
and my uber gay intake lol. It's just a temp one don't freak out hehe.
yea you def want to leave that peice in the throat of the manifold, if not, the air coming in will get all dishevled going into the plenum. That piece helps to keep the IAC section of the throttle body separate from the incoming air, know what I mean?
Yep makes sense. Is it ok to drive not hard till I get my o2 bung and fuel injectors in along with a tune? I need to drive it about 25 miles to get it welded.
when I didn't properly tune the skwirl, I melted the ringland on my #3 piston the day I swapped that manifold on and ran it at the track.
of course, I'm pretty sure I had my knock sensor turned off as well..
i'd take it easy until you can get the injectors in and tune it with a wideband.. the L61 runs lean in the top end as it is, now you're getting more air flow in upper rpm.. going to run lean even worse.
