Head porting (ld9)
Thursday, February 24, 2011 10:22 AM
When you guys ported your heads out, did you cut the valve guide flush with the ports or did you leave them alone? Im trying to get the most air flow and less restriction and i didnt know if that was a good idea to do or not. Im currently polishing the ports and started wondering that. Also what did you use to get into the area around the valve guide because my fingers are getting sore from sanding and i cant really get that part all that good....

From what I have heard you can cut the guides to improove flow but the life span of them will be decreased. I'm not sure by how much though.

save yourself money and time and get a 2.3 head (086 or 753)

the 753 has slightly smaller exhaust ports put still much larger than an ld9

since when does having to swap to a 2.3 style exhaust manifold or custom header (600+ dollars mind u) and mod the head to work on an LD9 save money vs just porting an LD9 by urself? and thats just for the 086... a 753 he would have to port out anyway.

some people would rather use what they have and make the setup run just as good as the one that supposed to be 'so much better'.

chris- ive heard either way is fine. personally... id rather remove the part of the guide that protrudes into the port. i cant remember where i read it but someone did a math test on the stresses of the valves vs our guide length or something and determined the length was overkill as it was so i think you'll be ok removing that 1/4" that protrudes into the intake side. the exhaust side barely has any coming through from what i remember...

i think what you need is a LONG carbide bit to get into there around the guides. its like 6" long iirc...

When I did my port n polish I did do some touch up to the guides because they do stick out rather obvious. Just dont eat them up too bad and yes do smooth them out.

086 has bigger valves too zyaaaaa....a header and gasket mod is easy man. I usally see eye to eye with you, but not on this one.

the 1mm os LD9 INTAKE valves are the same exact size as 086 intake valves. the 1mm os LD9 EXHAUST valves are 1mm smaller.

If you port the exhaust more than the intake you will lose torque and the motor will be really sluggish under 4k rpms. So now that the exhaust is cut out, go ahead and cut out down by the valves(throat should be 85-90% of valve diameter) on the intake and try to "square" the runner prior to valve guide. Take a piece of 100 grit sandpaper and radius the short turn well. Don't polish the intake like polishing wheels the fuel will puddle and idle like sh**. Also the surface only accounts for about 1% of flow so really not worth it. To save yourself some heartache, flow the head just to be sure your percentages and averages are in check.

Low lift flow is twice as important as peak lift.

What did you guys use to cut the valve giudes down ? Could you just use a carbide bur and smooth it out with the sanding drums ? Anyone have some pictures of their ported head? Just to have somehting to compare my work to.
