I am kinda curious as to how much boost or horsepower i will need to run to be able to break the tires loose through 1 gear.also consider my sunfire is automatic plus rolling on 19 inch wheels.I have the t-3 super 60 turbo.intercooled of course.

First let me say
WOW
That is like the stupidest question I have seen.
There is sooo many factors that it can not truly be answered properly. I could take your car stock and roast the tires in first gear, but that would be to a factor of how I drove it. Which would not be good on the tranny let me say.
Worry less about how much boost and more on having the right tune.

Roasting the tires threw the gear(s) is fun at first, but after having to replace the tires every few months it get old real quick. Not to mention that if you are ever in a situation where you need to get moving quickly you are going to be SOL.
its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa
who needs a turbo, just jack the car up just enough so the front tires are barely touching the pavement, put the tranny in first, you can spin them all day long....

Its an old concept even then it is mind blowing. Maybe the car owner had given good care to this car thats why it is still looking awesome.
Im telling you all.. the overalll IQ of the people populating this site is dropping drastically...

IQ,just because i am not the smartest about cars does not mean i an stupid.I have a degree in atmospheric science,am currently a meteorologist with the national weather service.am in the process of earning my masters degree in atmospheric science, specializing in severe convective weather.it was just a silly question.i think before someone puts post about someones IQ,you should know who your talking about.

so basically a fancy way of saying weather man. lol. and you are wanting to get a car to spin the tires in first gear?? wtf lol.
OK car people.how about explaining to me what affect the jet stream and jet maximums have on severe weather.you all are calling me stupid.
Weatherman, paid to be wrong 90% of the time...
If you want to spin your tires at will just buy some cheap, @!#$ty, narrow tires, and re route your washer fluid to just infront of the tires. You ask a stupid question and you will get the responses that you see here.
I don't believe OP has said car/mods. I want to see pictures of what could very likely be an awful looking J-body.

I think the post about IQ was in response to Joshua Timber. His post literally made no sense whatsoever.

Oh yeah that makes it soo much better. You went to school and paid alot of money to do it, to give out wrong info all the time!! lolol
Sorry I could not resist. In my town is is a ongoing joke about the weather guys being wrong.
Since you are a weather man, just tell yourself when it is going to rain (must be right on this), and drive like a ass in the rain. Should spin first gear all day long then.

Just disable the neutral rev limiter and neutral drop it. That'll spin the tires. Just remember the grinding, crunching noises mean the tires will spin faster. Do it enough, and you'll even save the weight of whatever money you have in your wallet.
hmm im not a fan of wheel spin it hurts my times at the track.

Hey Nick,
Sorry for the rude welcome to J Body. You arent alone with asking a question like this. Obviously there are a few people who feel the need to second guess someone's validity as a human being simply because they wouldnt do what you did.
Having flown airplanes professionally for over 20 years, I have a great deal of admiration for folks like you and really appreciate the effort you've put into and are continuing to put into a great career.
To actually answer your question though.....
You could experiment with simply adjusting the boost level. Or, somewhere you could find the traction coefficient of your tires (probably around .85 to .95) and by calculating the contact area and the multiplication effect of the gear ratios in the trans; the rolling diameter, etc. you might be able to figure it out. Sorry I don't have an actual formula. I'm sure the suspension design will also affect the ability of the wheels to spin too.
I think it was the late Mark Donohue, a road racing legend of the 60s and 70s who defined a car that had enough power as "one that will spin the wheels anytime I want by simply stepping on the gas".

Oh yay I want to get in on this meat swinging!
My 2220 Sedan could burn the tires in 1st gear, maybe move your floor mat so the pedal goes down further
Just because you know the weather systems, doesn't mean you know squat about how a motor, or a car works. I've studied both meteorology and aviation, but whoopde, it's nothing to brag about on a CAR forum.

Yes, just private now, I was going for instrument then onto commercial...but got out of it, not worth it anymore.
Its a very expensive hobby for sure...
Im no pilot or weather man, but i slept at a holiday inn express last night!
