96 is a bastard year for the ECU. But technically any year LD9 can be put in the 96 car.

97 and 98 year motors wold be best for easyiness.

in 99 some used a different knock sensor, which has a different size hole than the 96-98. It can be drilled out and tapped to use the 96 knock sensor with no problems.

So all the sensors will hook up with a 97 98. What do you mean by basterd year with the ecu in a nutshell and thanks for the above info

This helped me with my swap. Granted there were some differences with mine since I put a 96 LD9 into a 2000, its still pretty useful. http://www.j-body.org/faq//146/

Like John said, for pure easiness swap in a 96-98 ld9. If you happen to find a 99 make sure it doesnt have the different knock sensor. Some 99's (like mine) are pretty much a 2000 that they made the second half of 99 out of. The first have of the 99's are like the 96-98 2.4's

no all 99 have same sensor sadly, mine was first half of the year, but if you go 99+ dont forget to swap you head from the old engine over

^^^ all J-BODY 99's do, but all LD9's period do not. i have a 99 LD9 i recently pulled from a 99 grand am, its got fat injectors, EGR, 3-18 head, yada yada.

j-body LD9s go 96-98 and 99-02.
some other LD9's go 96-99 and 99.5-02.

OP- theres an oil level sensor in the pan for the 96, you wont use it.

No need to swap the head.

At most if you use a 99 motor you will need to use all injectors, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, from the 96, and then drill and tap for the knock sensor.

If you use a 97-98 (or a rare 99), you just swap.

lol i dont think he meant it as a nessecity. he was probably getting at doing it because it would raise compression.

Brad pretty much covered it. Some LD9's in 99 were the same as 98, 97 motors and some 99's were like 00+. For the easiest swap look for a 97-98 motor so all the sensors/electronics are the same.

I am not a tuner but have read the 96 ECU is slightly different then all other OBD2 years and I don't think HPT supports that year fully. So if your going to go beyond just swapping motors you might want to look into other years ECU.

HPT does not support 1996... 96 = OBD 1.5

well, other than the fact they have 6 second all motor cars, countless 8 and 9 second unaltered chassis turbo cars and limitless 12 and 13 second daily driven turbo and or all motor cars with enough aftermarket support to launch a space shuttle, no i guess they aint so hot.

You got to relize how cheap honda parts are and how much you got to do to a honda just to get them to go anywhere

See that does not make a car hot to me.

Honda's have been doing this way longer than we have and have had support way longer than we have.

As well as modified honda's out number modified J's.

thats fine but that is another argument entirely. just because there are more honda's than j-body's doesnt make hondas any less "hot".

and i agree hondas have been doing the "tuner" thing longer but as soon as the fast and furious hit it was anybody's game. and @!#$ thats been over 10 years ago now...

but lol we are totally derailing this guy's thread. we can argue this on OQ4TCFBG.
