I can buy a 98 cavalier and the guy said it has a 97 motor with 60,000 miles. But it's the 2200. Is it possible?
No. The 2200 was 98-02 only. Unless it was swapped by the owner which would of required a ecu and harness swap amongst other stuff.
Is there anyway I can tell of he actually swapped a new motor in? The odometer says 223,000 but like I said he told me the engine has 60,000.
If it has a metal intake, then he is bull@!#$ting you. If it has the plastic "2200" intake, then he is telling the truth, lol.
It's has a cold air intake.

I true 2200 will run on a 97 ECU and wiring harness just fine. Depending on what year 2200 you might have to swap the injector harness.

He was referring to the Intake Manifold. not the intake tube... Look on the other side of the throttle body.
This is a 1997 LN2
This is a 1998 LN2

des it go down the back of the engine? if it is on top then it's the 2.2 and not the 2200
I need a new sig.
I know the engine is the 2200. I'm just wondering if it really came out of a 97 because the only way would be if it was swapped into it.

If the car is a 98 and has a 2200 then it is from a 98+ car. 97 did not have a 2200, but a 2.2.
Which motor does it look like?

Like I said. I know the engine is the 2200. He did the swap into it himself. Said it came from a 97. So he is either lying about the swap or someone swapped a 2200 into a 97.
he's probably misinformed about what car he pulled the motor from.

Like in the picture shows. Just go by the valve cover. Notice the one on the 2.2 looks a little rougher and more square. The one on the 2200 looks smoother and has a little more curve to it.
It's possible that he's just BSing and the engine has never been swapped. There's plenty of people around with over 200k on those engines, for sure. I know of no way to verify if the engine has ever actually been changed.

If the body is a 1997 there is no way that the engine has not been swapped. There a huge visible differences between the pre 98 LN2 and the 98-02 2200. The OP already stated that the engine was in fact a 2200 which leads me to believe the seller has no idea that the motor was in fact from a 98-02 cavalier and not a 97. Or maybe the motor did come from a 1997 and that car had a motor swap as well.
Basically to make a long story short.
Pre 98 - LN2 2.2L
98-02 - 2200
end of discussion.
The OP also said the car is a 98, and that he was told it has a 97 engine.
Therefore, I have no idea why we're assuming that it's a 97 body.

Thank you. I didn't think what I said was confusing. 98 chassis with apparently 97 engine. Which is not true because it is an Sfi motor.
A couple realities here...
1) all LN2 engines are SFI... the 98+ actually say it though
2) the 2200 is still an LN2... just been revised for the 40 millionth time

I'm fairly sure that isn't true. I was thinking that only the 97 and the 98+ are. I could look at my 96 LN2 harness to verify that though I suppose.

Actually you are right... i was thinking third gen ob2 (and more so for this case, 97 and 98)... 1992-1996 were MPFI. Prior to that, they were TBI... and though i should brush up on my first gen knowledge... i want to say the originial 1.8 and 2.0 litre LN2s were carburetted (prior to TBI)

Correct we owned a 85 or 86ish 1.8 that had a carb
