Okay I really should trade mark this but I wont so please don't steel my idea. And don't laugh if this idea is weird cause I like it anyways.
I am going to be trying to convert my sunfire into an hardtop convertable. Anyone in to help?
good luck, be sure reinforce EVERYTHING!!! i recommend either getting a vert and cutting the top off of a coupe or at least find a vert and observe it's bracing

Yeah I will be doing alot of research before I touch any tools trust me I don't want to mess this up. I am thinking I can take out the rear speakers and deck and put some lifts and wire them to a timer so they work with the lifts that will lower and fold the top into place.
I would definitely second what COGcavi suggested. Get a convertible Sunfire so you already have proper chassis bracing entact, then find a wrecked out J coupe to pull the roof off of. I think it's definitely possible. Especially since you already have a good idea of how much work you're getting into.

Thought about it before.... but considerin my J is my daily driver aswell... scrapped the idea until long time later... can't have that much downtime =-x

You are definately not the first person to think about it. Good luck, but I won't hold my breath waiting.
yeah I wont be holding my break either lol. I am going to end up buying a new car to drive around and make my fire into a project car.
I think it could work out good, but you should look at some of the euro-beauties that have already done it.. Benz', Beamers, etc. I think you would have to take the hardtop roof, and section it. Probably make 2 cuts across it, weatherstrip the edges, then put the pieces on actuators and shocks. A solid roof wont fit into the trunk while its down. You'll HAVE to cut it.

Well I was born in Ocala lol but no plans on moving. I just started college so I'm stuck here for a little while.
basically, our cars have a unibody chasis, which means the roof is part of the chasis of the car, and is a pretty important structural piece. without the roof, the car will end up folding in upon itself. verts have a ton of bracing added to keep that from happening.
in order to do something like this, you'd have to brace the entire car like a vert first, which isn't an easy task. so far, i don't think anyone has successfully done this yet.
yeah I found this in my research and I got a little discouraged.
cannon fodder - how about t-top conversion on our cars. can it be done with time, money, and patience??
thanks

5 seconds to find another street...
absolutely can be.....i actually researched this very idea and have a pattern and connection drawing that i made so that the car wouldnt lose and stability....(friend has a t-top camaro) but the cost im not sure would accomodate the practicallity of it!!
