drifting O.o

So I had a bet with a friend that said I couldn't get my car sideways. I won. I want to know how many people here have done/tried and fail to drift their jbody cause it is so much fun .

you didn't drift your car, you probably just pulled the ebrake and slid your rear tires around. stupid stupid stupid stupid.

stupid.

keep doing that, and you'll end up with a pretty trashed suspension.

Agreed....although if you lock Fast food Trays under your rear tires then its FUN

yeah, until the tray gets so worn out that your tire catches and you trash your suspension. let's not give this newb any more ideas than the dumb ones he's got already, lol.

ok first I agree you did not drift. Second how will pulling your ebrake mess up your suspension. Third if you do the trays correctly they will not wear out, even if the trays wear out how would it mess up your suspension? Fourth it is possible to drift a FWD, it is very hard to do, but it is possible and most people that own a FWD would not have the skills to do so. Fifth how does this mess up your suspension?

x2

You may get flat spots on the tires, but what's it going to do to the rest of the suspension?

i imagine springs / struts are made to rebound up and down rather than back and forth... thats just my guess

How will the trays not wear out??? Its a matter of about 2-3 mins and the trays are toast, its common friction laws that apply to that....run run plastic trays under tires over concrete and in a matter of mins the friction wil cause them to heat up and melt away!!!

As for hurting the suspension, i could see where spinning in circles and then instantly catching traction could snap a wheel bearing or if going fast enough bend something...granted it prolly wouldnt happen on the first time but im sure that repeated doings would mount up!

There is no rebound back and forth. Think about it, if the front of your car goes into a nose dive, the struts and springs compress in the front, right?

If you go throw a quick left hand turn, then your passenger's side struts/springs will compress.

The struts/springs wont move. They are kept the same distance apart by way of the subframe & strut towers up front, and rear axle & strut mounting locations in the rear.

ok... ive got tones of experience "tray drifting"... lol... the best, and also hardest to control, is cast iron skillets... its like the equivalent 2 ice under the ass end... lol... if u goin fast enough to bend/break sumthin on the suspension on ur j then u'd probably flip da b!tch... lol... the worst besides destroying 80K mile tires in about 35K that i have done is that if you hold the steering wheel as far as if will go for anymore than about 5secs that u WILL damage ur PS pump 1 way or another... i learned that the hard way... other than that, it really doesnt hurt anything on the car id you do it rite and not ur plastic ass trays and u DONT hit a curb or small dog or sumthing... lol... i even have video... lol...

please dont give people bad ideas guys.

if you want to drift, get a RWD car and do it where people aren't around!!

now that drifting happened in F&F, we ALL want to drift, don't we?(note sarcasm here) so lets stick the biggest wing we can find, 20 inch rims on the car, loudest sound system to the car, and try and get a ten second car, why don't we?

jezz...

yea i know that, but if your sliding on trays, and all the sudden your tire catches traction, sideways, it would make the spring/strut assembly want to go sideways, not up/down

bad news, it would seem.

either way, ill never do it

If you are on trays you should not be cathcing traction at all at the point you just described.

I have done the tray thing (fun!!) use 2 trays. I have found the only spot the trays wear is directly under the tire, so 2 trays keeps your tires off the ground so they do not wear. Still the actions you would do in this are pretty much the same as Auto-X, so no damage because of this action. I'm not saying doing things like this will not put wear on your car, because anything you do will put wear on your car.

not too feed the other side of the arguement, since i basically agree with your end...BUT...dont most of the guys who regularly auto-x thier J's have wheels bearing problems?, needing frequent replacement...

Okay first off, I didn't do it cause of F & F I did it cause it was bored and just wanted to try again. The first time it was a power slide. The 2nd was a drift you can ask the few people that saw it. Also I am not that worried about tear since I will be getting a new car some time soon. I get free tires from my friend who works at a good year so thats not a problem and its not like I go around just randomly pulling the Ebreak. This was an open road with two large fields on each side with no cars in site. So blah I don't care if you think I'm a child because you all know that you have had some thoughts about trying to drift. At least I have the balls/stupidity to actually try and do it.

YOU CAN'T DRIFT A FWD CAR.

Wikipedia wrote:Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a sport based on the technique; this article deals primarily with the sport. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right), and the driver is controlling these factors.

Muffin im gonna have to disagree with your first statement!!!

Honda Tuning march 2005 front cover has a civic in full drift, def a fwd car....it can be done in a fwd car it is just a lot harder and not as fancy as a rwd drift....
