Thought this might be fun...
How many miles or kilometers do you have on your first gen j? How many engines have you replaced?
On my 84, I am on engine #2 after the original one threw a rod back in 1992.
I have 144K miles on the body.
'86 Cavalier CS Wagon - 2.0 OHV - 131,434 miles
'84 Sunbird 2000 Base Model - 1.8 OHC - 110,082 miles
Both original engines as far as I can tell - how would I be able to check the codes?
'86 Z24 hatch- 68K original miles, orig drivetrain AFAIK (never checked) and hopelessly well below having the ability to swap an engine. Had 62K on it when I bought it 3 years ago.
If I had to do it over, I'd have tried to find a cracker jack shop in the northeast to do the 3.4 swap when the trans needed a rebuild, as the engine leaks oil quite a bit too.

1984 Cavalier Convertible that my wife purchased in 86. 163,000 miles and just finished swapping out the original motor this week. Original motor was just tired and the clutch was slipping.
Had original starter, P.S. pump, alternator, axel shafts, transmission (clutch was replaced at 90k miles in 1992) and coolant hoses.
Been able to check and verify a matching engine code in the '84 Pontiac.

1985 type 10 cav,I am the 3rd owner my sister orig owned from 90-98 I bought from here and drove daily long commutes. In short 204,475 orig miles runs strong.I have done too much to list but some, new alter, batt, complete rear end resto(ALL of it) aside from brakes, new spkrs and wiring total eng repaint, rebuilt tbi.Keeping it short, but solid car,and yeah need to still do my front axles both sides bc input shaft seal(drvr side leaks like a river) but will be replacing both.Stays indoors 24/7 covered.Oh yeah orig paint factory yellow gold and mighty rare to see espec these days.
I'm on what I'm sure is at least 240,000, I've replaced the engine 1x, not sure what all has been done. I'll try to sort through the receipts I have. Some have dates, but no mileage. Some have mileage, but no dates. My mother about drove the wheels off of it. When I got it, I bought her a 93 Cutlass with 98,000 miles. We sold it a few years ago with 320,000 on the odometer. A lady bought it and drove it home.
Her current LeSabre had 50,000 a couple years ago, but has ~120,000 now.
The underside of the 84 Bird (whats left of it) shows the wear.
1982 Cimarron 119,000kms original motor
1982 J2000 77,000kms original motor
1986 sunbird gt turbo 43,000kms motor blown...
Paul, Well finally found out what was messin up my engine...the alternator diodes. Took out most of the electronics. Anyhow My 84 Sunbird has 99343 original motor but had the block and the head trued because of a head gasket problem. I am working on my second top.
My Sunbird has 112,000 on it and is on the second engine and transmission (the new ones have about 4000 miles on them). The first one ran great but when my fuel pressure regulator croaked on the way home from the track one night and dumped a ton of fuel in the engine it started burning oil. So I built up a spare set up and stuck it in. These things happen when you jack the boost way up!
