I think factory exhaust diameter is 2 inches...You'll probably need to cut off your factory tip...hell, prolly the entire system behind the cat...that is what I had to do...running 2.5in stainless steel piping. Get a cherry bomb, and just clamp it on to the exhaust pipe.
1- it is either 2 inches or 1 and 3/4
2-if your using a glass pack, get a summit or borla or somthin good if you want performance and sound,, everyone uses cherrybomb's tho cause they are cheap and they make it sound mean :-)
3-dont get what you were asking.....
4- definitly weld, no leaks and no chance of falling off or anything strange like that.lol
5- step by step??? step one - go to store and buy glasspack, step 2, install it
have fun, let us know how it sounds

if its before 92 you have a 2 1/4" exhaust
AFter 92 is 2"
I say clamp it...to prevent rusting.
I put a $15.00 cherry bomb muffler on my 1992 cavalier 2.2 and it sounds pretty good. You need a 2 1/4 inch or a 2 inch diameter muffler and a tip for the end if you want it to stick out flush with the bumper. You will have to weld the stock mount on it.I didnt use a mount on mine but my exaust hits on large bumps.
