I'm new to cavi's, and this forum. But i do have pretty extensive automotive knowledge ( i read alot). In about a week and a half i will be aquiring a 92 z24 3 speed auto. 100,000 miles, never benn above 4000 rpm (i know the guy, it was drivin like it was his life on the line). I was wondering how big of a shot of nitrous you can run on stock internals on the 3.1 before you start doing damage. Yes i plan on doing a wet system.
a wet kit, probly do a 65 or 75 shot without much problem. however id highly recomend an msd dis 4 box for it. with it, you can retard the timing to reduce the risk of detonation.
I figured since it had forged rods it could probably handel a little more. I plan on putting in colder plugs. And i can't remember the details, but one of my dads old racing buddies used to have a small tank of cam2 in the trunk, and when he would hit the nitrous, the fuel pump on the cam2 tank would feed the nitrous injectors with cam2. While the stock injectors still got regular fuel just like they always do. That way he didnt have to screw with timing. (way higher octane.)
yes, the rods are forged, but not the problem. the v6 doesnt break rods, they are the strongest point of the whole motor. its the pistons and rings you need to worry about. detonation from nitrous will kill them. you need to get the timing backed off for anything higher than a 65 shot.
my turbo sunbird is running a 75hp wet direct port shot pulling 3 degrees of timing with an MSD 6al and multi-stepper. I've also got a progressive controller on it.

So, it looks like i'll have to do timing. What is THE CHEAPEST way to back off timing. I really don't want to put much money in this motor. But wen i do get around to it, i'm going to shot peen the rods, change all the bearings, and put in dished forged pistons.
well, the dis 4 is the only way to adjust the timing without computer tuning. its not a cheap item, but you c an use it with any dis motor, 4-8 cylenders.
I dont have a problem with comuter tunning, but the only real ecu knowledge i have is for obd-1 turbo b16's. I don't know any other systems.
the gm stuff takes a bit of getting used to. unfortunetly the best program (gmpcm) shut down, so its kind of hard to say what route to go with tuning.
your best bet is the dis4. along with the timing retarder (2 stages, triggers when you arm the nitrous) it has a 2 step rev limiter for launching and over rev protection, 3 sparks per combustion under 3300rpm, and a bunch of other cool fetures. it isnt just for running nitrous, it smooths the idle and take off.
