Saturday, January 14, 2006 1:42 PM
Just got back from autozone.
While i was in there i figured that i would get the price and part number for a head gasket(2.0 turbo)

Is this PN right?

felpro 9014pt

This gasket is also used on the N/A 2.0's also.

Are you turning the boost way up or leaving it stock or under 15 lbs?

I'll tell you my experience and you can take it for what it's worth. I ran my stock 108,000 mile engine for 2 years at 15-17 lbs of boost with no problems. The gasket was changed years ago when it had about 45,000 miles on it so in reality it had about 60,000 miles on it.

My new engine had a stock GM gasket which I managed to blow out in a couple of hundred miles but it had 26 lbs of boost (though I didn't know it at the time).
A guy on Darkmuck's site told me he had blown a number of gaskets and found the Isuzu 2.2 gasket was the best he'd tried because it had the embossed rubber around the coolant jacket holes and because the holes were smaller than in any other gasket he'd used. So there was more "meat" between the fire ring and the water jacket hole. So I went to the Isuzu gasket and have had no problems since. BUT...

Since I'm fairly lazy and have no desire to pull the head off any more than necessary I had a friend of mine O ring the head while it was off. ALSO...

Since I was at the very beginning of my computer tuning learning curve I had too much timing and was getting a bunch of detonation at high boost. I pulled the timing way back now so I only get an occasional 1 or 2 degrees of knock if at all.

So the moral of the story is " if it don't ping it (probably!) won't blow"
I doubt I had much (if any) detonation with my old engine which is probably why it lived at 17 lbs. I always had an intercooler on it too.

Didn't you say Ned was your buddy? I don't recall ever talking about head gaskets with him. What's his opinion?

Isuzu 2.2 gasket.got it.....what year(s) though?
I'll probably use the 2.0 felpro one first, and if i have any problems with it, then i'll try the isuzu 2.2 gasket.

I met Ned like3 or 4 years ago at the track...when he was running low 9's and 8's.....
After listening to him telling me and a friend of mine about his car(and seeing the timeslips), I became obsessed with finding one of these cars...i found one finally! (4 years later)
I found his email address and we have been emailing back and forth. He also lives where i do.
He was the poineer of this...here in louisville.
Actually theres only 3 sunbird turbos here ....soon to be 2 . (after neds friend sells his car)

The sunbird is a sleeper, i think it'll be fun smoking some mustangs, imports, and camaro's.

Wow, Louisville? That isn't too far from me. In fact thats where the radio and TV stations I watch and listen to most often are. After I get time to do more on my Sunbird it would be neat to get together and compare mods and come up with ways to make them go faster.

Isuzu #80912904. Fits 1998 - 2000 Amigo 2.2 engine. I believe their engine code is XS22E or X22E but I could be off a couple digits. List price is $42 bucks. I just picked one up today as a matter of fact. I like to be prepared for the worst! Good luck!

Except when I got mine from Cometic, I ended up waiting more than 2 months to get it

Mine took me 2 weeks to get the first time around. They told me they've streamlined things so they can have one out the door within 3 days. If you can find anyone who has it in stock knock yourself out dude.
