its not worth it to make a hard top into a convertible there is A TON OF BRACING ON A VERT
if you have a donor vert i'd get that car up and going verts are becoming harder and harder to find
Z24 Cardomain Site ll
ZQ8 Car Domain Site
144 extra peices of bracing in a vert, to be exact. even then, a vert is still flexes a lot. cutting the top off and just putting the vert top on will have the car folded in half within a week, at tops, if it doesnt fold in half while you are working on it.
144 pieces = around 450-500 pounds of extra bracing. And no, they're not easily added to a coupe. We're not talking bolt on braces, we're more in the realm of reworking the unibody.
You could always weld the doors shut and hop over them to get in.....
Sorry, the Dukes never rode in a convertible.
get it running and sell it verts are hard to find now days
trust me i've been looking
if you are looking, and are in ontario--grab last weeks Triad.
There is an 86 (87?) sunbird convertable, new rag but blowed-up motor for 200 bucks in the 905 area code.
I already tossed my copy, otherwise I'd post the contact info--its in the clasified's under "80's cars" though.
Rice.....Part of a balanced Pontiac diet.
There may be 144 peices of bracing but most of them are bolt on.. trust me. The subframe braces are riveted on for christ's sake lol.
The cars were not MADE as convertibles that is what is important to keep in mind. They were made INTO convertibles. The roofs are litterally just cut off the cars the doors are retrofitted with new components and their upper frames again litterally were just cut off, the rockers on the car have subframa braces riveted to them that the fuel and brake linesa re re-routed under...
Is it doable? Absolutly.
Would it be worth it? not at all.
thanks alot guys i was just curious, it would probally be easier just to fix the z-24 convertable instead, but i dont know if ill go that far i have about 6g's invested in my sunbird,so if anyone is interested ill probally be selling he cavalier, make an offer ,it needs a fuel pump to get the 3.1 litre running.
If anything, Id take everything from your car you like/need and put it on the vert!
to prove verts flex alot anyway, I took mine into a mechanic's whose driveway was on a slant. while half on the road half on his driveway, I tried putting up the top. It got to the frame, and I could only hook one latch, the other side was so far off I couldn't even force it down (pull it + motor) to put the other one on. It's a hell of alot of work too, bracing, top, motors & wiring, the side windows (all 4)... like the others said, get it running and sell the other, sell the vert if you want some extra $$.
I'll take it! I loved my vert cav, and so did everyone else. I'd do anything to have it back/have another one.

when putting a vert on a wheel free hoist you have to unhook the top or you run the risk of buckling it. when you pick it off the ground, you can litteraly see the car flexing, and you cant open the doors because the car is using them as structure.
so would my 91 bird 3.1 convert becomeing hard to find in good shape.
duuuuude sell it to meeeeeeeee I'd love another vert. How much would ya sell it for? I'm in need of a new car
make an offer man,i idnt pay much for it and i dont have a use for it any more
lol well I bought my old one for $2700, but since I'm low on cash, and I dont have a job anymore. I'm limited to looking for cars under $1000 CAD. And then there's shipping on top of that, and because I've never needed to have a car shipped before, I have no idea how much that would cost...
I was only kidding about buyin it unless you wanna sell it for around $1000 CAD x.x;
i was thinking like 5-600 cad ,i know what its like to have a sweet deal outta the price range,i dont know about shipping where are you from? probally easier to send me an email
i know someone who is selling a white 88 Z24 Convertible soon.....
if it's located near me and being sold for anywhere as cheap, I may take that one.
without knowing where YOU are located, we have no way of knowing if you're close to him. why don't you fill out your registry further?
