Z24 digital dash speedometer stopped working

Speedometer suddenly is stuck on 0. Odometer will not increment either. Took the car to aamco thinking it was a trans problem. They swapped out the sensor on the tranny and still the digital speedometer is reading 0. They pulled the codes from the computer and 0 codes.

Aamco stated they have exhausted thier skills and to just live with it. Hard to figure out how fast I am going with the dash constantly showing a big 0. All other guages work fine. The 0 even resets properly when the key is turned on. Is there a black box or something that I need to replace under the dash? Ideas? Thanks

its your ECM, i work at a car audio shop, and i have seen this same problem, on our cars, its the ECM, i have to change my ECM because it to is starting to do the same thing. it also will affect your charging system, and the way your veichle runs. i am lucky tho, my car only runs like crap, and i have no tach, but when i ran the codes in the reader, no codes came up, and when that happens, anyone that knows anything will know that its the ECM, go to the wrecking yard and pull onw out of an other car, you might have to get a few different ones to get a good one. but this is a common problem with our cars.

the speedometer doesnt get its signal from the ecm. the dignal goes from the speed sensor to the cluster, and from the cluster to the ecm. the later model cars (91+ i beleve) goes to the ecm first, then to the cluster.

im gonna say its the cluster itself. they are very problematic. try to find another one.

You are correct. I traced the speed sensor and it directly connects from the sensor - up to firewall - thru a firewall grommet and then dissappears into a maze of wires ... whew

What are the proper steps to remove the digital cluster? Also I am being told that I will have to swap a chip between the old dash and the new dash to keep the same mileage reading. Which chip is this and where would it be located? Thanks for your help.
