'93 Sunbird CD player

Hi everyone:

I'm new to this site, and I came here hoping you can help me out with some information. I have a 1992 Grand Prix, whoch has the '89 "Component" radio setup, the same as the one in the sunbirds. I has the square head unit, the hidden brain part to the radio, and the remote cassette player (with the digital EQ). I recently found a NOS CD deck for the sunbirds, and I am looking t install it.

I know that the GP's cassette's harness plug is identical to the Sunbird CD player's, with the EQ on a separate plug. However, I'm wondering if I can splice into that existing plug, or if I should just reroute the harness to the CD player. The reason I ask is, I have seen sunbirds with both the CD and the cassette player, and I'm wondering how it is hooked up.

Basically, I'm looking for any wiring diagrams, pinouts, pictures, scans, whatever, in reference to your stock radios and CD players. Thanks for all your help!

Ross

Mine had a factory CD player that had some wires which came from the radio hooked up to it. Maybe the wires are the same for both the CD and tape player?

I beleive they are the same wires, since the plug is identical. Did you have the cassette player, too? I think there is just one plug for either the cassette or the CD.

If I splice the two together, I'm just worried about voltage getting into one or the other units and ruining them.

I just received my CD player today, and this is the wiirng configuration:

Large Plug
1. Black
2. Red*
3. White*
4. Blue*
5. Green
6. Brown
7. Orange
8. Yellow
9. Purple
* These three are wrapped together in black tape

Small Plug
1. Gray
2. Red/white

Any ideas on what each wired does? I recognize a few (ground, accessory, 12V), but the rest I'm not sure of.

Where did you get your CD player?

I've never seen both CD and casette in the same car. I've looked through many J's at the junkyard. I don't believe GM's electronics for those units are "smart" enough for 2 components to share the same bus. Then again I've never actually tried it, so I'm not 100% sure.

I actually found the CD player on eBay, NOS, never used. It came with the plastic still on the VFD screen. I've been looking for one for a long time. The GP Cassette/EQ looks realllllly cool, especially at night, but I wanted CD capability as well. I don't mind if I lose the cassette playablity (as long as it lights up), but I would like to have a CD player as well. My car has become a sort of colleection of rare, high GM options of the era.

I have seen pictures and heard of a few people using both components in tandem in the sunbirds. Only one plug slot is provided (on both the GP and Sunbird), and I've been looking into how its done.

I wouldn't doubt the plug is the same, just becuase GM does that, and the parts are practically identical, except GP's never got a CD option in those days becuase of the dashboard space. My car is upstate right now, so I can't physically inspect the plug right now to see if they match. The setup was used in a number of cars, all with different audio options, and from what i've seen, the plugs have always looked identical.

IF these things are anything like the GM radios i'd guess that the smaller separate connector is illumination -- which you can test rather easily by only plugging that one in and trying it. That being said, if your cassette deck has the same plug and there are other cars in the junkyard, i'd simply find out which wires provide +12v and ground, and put power to the cassette deck.. as far as blowing anything out, i believe the controls were on the front of both the CD and Cassette unit, so i believe all the rest of the wiring is probably for low level audio (line level maybe?) ... never owned a j-car, and gutted only one GP with that system in it.

my advice would just be to plug the wiring harness into the CD unit, then go to a junkyard and hack off the harness from another car, and wire up only power. this way its there for show but not for much else.

A haynes manual may have this in it... i haven't looked at my car in 8 months, let alone worked on it since the '04 bash.

Well, upon closer inspection, while the GP cassette and Sunbird CD decks have the same physical plug, the wiring pinouts are different. Does anyone have a service manual with the diagram that sould shed some light on the subject?
