Is there no way of doing it without removing the power steering pump?

Man..... I don't remember what the stock belt system was like at all.. but let me tell you, after taking the head off 5-6 times, I could change a headgasket in an hour. There is nothing on the serpentine system that is hard to remove or install, including the power steering pump. If I remember corectly, the belt tensioner is at the base of the power steering pump bracket. There are two difficult bolts to get on the power steering pump and they are part of an engine mount. Easy once you hae done it a few times.

You don't need to take off the hoses, just remove the pump bracket bolts and push it back out of the way... it help if there is no hood on your car.

I did mine a couple weeks ago. You don't have to remove anything. First take the belt off, then reach around behind the power steering pump and you will be able to get to the 15 mm bolt that holds the tensioner in. Take a ratchet with a deep 15 mm socket, loosen it up, and it will come right out. Put the new one in where you took the old one from, make sure to get the pin in the hole so the spring tension will be there, then tighten it back up. It takes less than 10 minutes to change, and that includes belt removal and re installation.

I can nearly guarantee it's not squeeking from lack of tension. It's probobly your alternator itself dying. Listen closer for the source of the noise I've seen it a dozen times. I"ve never known the tensioner to go bad.

WAIT!.....dont guarentee anything yet man......the squeeling WAS caused by lack of tension.....my tensioner was bouncing like crazy......the reason it broke is because Ive had a few alternator failures.....so I would push down on the tensioner with a socket extension and occasionally it would slip and shoot back up .......but last night I used a crescent wrench to grip the squared section where the breaker bar inserts....it worked great....on another note.....this new LIFETIME WARRANTY hitachi alternator is awsome!
